In Manhattan, the Scarlet Witch is having a nightmare. She wakes screaming. Now awake she looks over at a picture of her and the Vision together. Vision has his arms around her stomach. A bolt of lightning strikes.

In Washington D.C., Yellowjacket and Wasp stand outside the White House. Wasp says that it is remarkable the way they have put everything back together again after Kang’s attack. Wasp says that it is also amazing how quickly the government has started talking down to the Avengers again. She says that they flew all the way down there just to get yelled at for letting so many “security risk” members on the team. She says that it isn’t as though they had a choice. Hank looks questioningly at his box of food. Wasp asks what is wrong and Hank says that he isn’t sure that he is really hungry. Wasp says that they are plantains and that he is always saying that he needs to try different things. Hank says that these are really different. She says that she wants to show him something new. She shrinks down to Wasp size and flies. Hank shrinks and flies after her. He asks if there is a mall around there. Wasp says that the Kang ordeal has opened her eyes to the fact that there is a world of languages, foods, religions, customs, and art. Hank asks where they are. Wasp says that they are at the Corcoran Gallery and says that there is a painting that she wants to show him. Wasp shows him City Night by Georgia O’Keeffe. Hank says that it is nice. Wasp says, “O’Keeffe said, ‘One can’t paint New York as it is but rather as it’s felt.’ And what that means to me, about our home… about Manhattan, is that nothing is seen the same way by anyone. And how great and diverse our city is for that. It’s good to be different, Hank.” Hank says that he sees it now and that it is beautiful. Wasp apologizes but says that she needed this after the Congressional chastising. Hank says that Cap will call George junior and it’ll be over. He says that at least they didn’t assign Gyrich to be their liaison. Wasp looks at Hank and says that she trusts him and that she loves him. Wasp and Hank kiss. The kiss is disturbed as the building starts to shake. A column falls and Hank grows to a giant size and catches it. Wasp blasts at falling debris. She looks outside and says that there is some kind of storm out there. She starts to say that they should call the Avengers, but she doesn’t get to finish her thought.

Captain America and Falcon make their way through Manhattan. Cap says that it is frightening what he did to the girl. Cap asks if he works with this girl. Falcon says that she is one of their top engineers. He says that the cops ran his fingerprints and that when he found out who it was that he knew that he wouldn’t be able to take the guy down alone. Cap says that he is glad that he called and that it is good to catch up. Cap asks what happened to his new costume. Falcon says that he got the armor because he felt like he needed an edge, but that he realized that being trained by Cap was all the edge he needed. He says that the kids that looked up to him didn’t recognize him and that he almost got into a fight with Namor because he thought that he was Stingray. Cap says that sounds like Namor. Cap tells Falcon to tell him about his new job. Falcon says that they are reconstructing the World Trade Center area, and that it might take years but that New York will be better than ever. Falcon tells Cap to hold on. Falcon sees through the vision of his falcon their prey in an alley buying drugs. The dealer is warning the man that the drugs are over ninety pure and that he wouldn’t want to lose one of his best customers. Dr. Zabo says that he is hardly an opiate addict and that they just gives his other habit a little kick. Redwing swoops in at Zabo. Zabo ducks into a swooping punch from Falcon. Captain America stands over the fallen Zabo and says that he is coming with them. Zabo says that he is not and that it is always one of them spoiling his fun. He says that they are too late and that he just had a dose of his personal prescription. Zabo transforms into Mister Hyde. Hyde says that he had ripped trucks apart with his bare hands and bloodied Thor. He asks how the two of them plan to best him. Cap says that Hyde’s points are noted. Cap yells, “Avengers Assemble!” In addition to Cap and Falcon, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Warbird, and Iron Man confront Hyde. Hyde starts to run. The dealer is holding a gun. Cap throws his shield and hits the man in the wrist causing him to drop the gun. Cap tells Iron Man to call NYPD and pick up some trash. Iron Man says that it is already done. Cap wars everyone to be careful and to try and take Hyde down quick. Wanda coughs and Cap asks her if she is all right. Wanda tells him not to concern himself. Vision flies ahead.

Hyde flips over a cab with one hand and smashes a second. He throws one of the cabs, but Iron Man catches it. The cabbie thanks Iron Man and asks Tony Stark if he has any stock tips. Iron Man tells him to stick to paper trading. Warbird says, “Aah. The joys of a public identity. Eh, Tony?” Iron Man gives Warbird a “heads up”, but Hyde manages to hit her with another cab. Falcon says that it was a big mistake hitting that girl. Hyde says that his only mistake was not finishing the job. Wanda asks Hyde if he is too doped up to realize that he has just covered himself with gasoline. She gives a hex and sets Hyde on fire. Hyde screams in pain and slams the cab he was holding over his head to the ground. A piece of shrapnel flies up and hits Wanda’s shoulder. Falcon catcher her as she goes unconscious. Vision says that Hyde’s lack of humanity surprises even him and says that he will never understand why he would poison his brain. Vision puts his arm through Hyde’s back as Cap’s shield hits Hyde in the face. Vision asks Falcon about Wanda. Falcon says that it is a deep cut, but that she will be all right. Vision says that of course she will. Hyde lies unconscious on the ground and Cap says, “Couldn’t bend this shield, could you Hyde?” Cap’s Avenger signal goes off and Jarvis tells him that they are all needed back at the mansion.

Back at the mansion, Cap reads the pictures and asks Jarvis when it happened. Jarvis says that it was twenty minutes ago. Jarvis says that he was unable to contact most of the reserve Avengers, but that those he could are waiting in the comm.-room. He says that the worst news is that both Wasp and Yellowjacket were in Washington D.C. when it happened. Cap says that he knows and that he has tried contacting them several times. Falcon asks what it is and Cap shows him two pictures of Washington D.C. In the second picture the entire area seems to have been swallowed up in an empty void. Cap says that the President and most of Congress is missing. He says that the country is in a state of panic and that they could use him there. Falcon says that he isn’t going anywhere.

In the comm.-room, She-Hulk asks if they are all dead. Iron Man says that he is guessing that the city is simply misplaced instead of destroyed. Warbird asks Vision if he shouldn’t go check on Wanda. Vision says that he doesn’t think that she needs him either physically or emotionally. Ant-Man tells someone to tell him what is going on. Jack of Hearts says that they are trying to figure that out now. Ant-Man says that he has a daughter and wants to know if the void is spreading. Jack asks why he is even there since he isn’t even a reserve Avenger. Ant-Man says that he picked up the signal off one of Pym’s old helmets. He asks Jack who he is anyway. Jack says that he has heard enough from “Hank Pym-Lite”. Ant-Man gets right up in his face, but Cap’s shield flies between them and Cap tells them to ease off. Jack says that they were just on edge. Ant-Man says that they are only human. Cap says, “Wrong. You’re an Avenger now. You’re more than human. We have to shoulder responsibilities no one else can. We work together as a team. We strive for perfection. So leave your faults at the mansion door. Got it?” Warbird reminds Jack about what Pym said would happen if he lost his temper. Jack says that he knows. Iron Man says that there is bad news and that the cities are disappearing again. He says that London, Islamabad, and Doomstadt have been swallowed up. Black Panther enters and says that Wakanda has been hit as well. Gyrich walks in with Panther and says that the world’s capitals and leaders are disappearing. He says that anarchy is going to hit every street corner soon. Everyone starts yelling at Gyrich. Panther says that Gyrich has been an unwelcome tagalong to him lately, but that they need to hear him out. Gyrich says that they need someone with political experience. Iron Man admits that Gyrich is right. Iron Man says that they are getting a call from the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Secretary-General says that the President of the General Assembly would have called, but that he has gone missing. He says that 130 of the 189 members have gone missing and that they have just added article 112 to the UN charter. He says that they are relinquishing the reins of leadership and asking the Avengers to lead the world.

Wanda is sitting up in bed with a bandaged arm and doing tarot cards. The lovers card comes up, but the green caped man and the red dressed woman are looking away from each other. Then the death card rises. Finally all the cards start to go nuts. One card grows a face and asks for help. A tear wells in Wanda’s eye.

Avengers’ Files rating: 7.5 out of 10

I really like the direction that Geoff Johns is going with the book. I like the focus on Wanda and Vision. I like the fact that She-Hulk seems to be hanging around the team. I like the insertion of a random villain, especially Mr. Hyde, in addition to the main threat. I like that Falcon is hanging out with Captain America again. The only part of Johns writing that I didn’t really care for was the attitude that he gave Jack of Hearts. Jack was humming and hawing in the last issue and now he is throwing his chest out as an official Avenger. 4.5 out of 5 for the writing. I still don’t really care for Kieron Dwyer, but I have to admit that he has some nice shots in this issue.
