Falcon thinks about the pain when he was fused with Redwing. He says that he was created to be a plant against Captain America by the Red Skull. He says that Red Skull may have given him his powers, but that his parents made him who he is. He says that he is Sam Wilson, the Falcon, and an Avenger. He looks down at the world’s capitals and the destruction that they are causing.

She-Hulk, Vision, Black Panther, Warbird, Iron Man, and Captain America get up. She-Hulk says that she feels like her cousin hit her in the head and asks where they are. Falcon says that they have found the world’s capitals. Panther says that Doom was right and that they are no longer on Earth. Iron Man and Vision both start picking up Yellowjacket and Wasp’s emergency beacon. Falcon notes that Cap’s shield isn’t with him. Cap says that they will worry about that later and that they have work to do. The Avengers are suddenly surrounded by the same energy Wasp and Yellowjacket are surrounded by. Scorpio greets them. Several hooded figures stand behind him. Vision says that he cannot phase through it. Cap says that he recognizes the costume, but not the voice. Scorpio introduces himself as the one true Scorpio and says that it is an honor to meet Captain America. Scorpio says that he presents the world as it is and motions to the burning and destruction of the world’s capitals. He says that they are all down there blaming each other. Captain America says that they know that he used the Zodiac Key to separate the In-Betweener. Scorpio says that of course they have done their homework. He says that he needed the raw power of Chaos. He says that he needed “this realm and its brotherhood as a home for anarchy.” Scorpio says that he used to be like them. He says that he used to think that his destiny was to be a surgeon. He says that he worked hard to become one, but then he realized how insignificant he was in the big picture. He says that he wanted to matter, to be important. He says, “Which is why the key sought us… me out, and now, as of tomorrow… I’ll be known as the man who killed the Avengers.” Scorpio fires the key at the Avengers. The Avengers’ bones are visible though their bodies as they scream in pain.

Order throws Namor aside. He tells Thor that he is not going to be fused with Chaos again, and that he had best leave him alone if he doesn’t want to wind up as the other mortals. Thor says, “Mortal? I am not a mortal, demon. I am the God of Thunder! I am Thor!” A bolt of lighting hits Thor’s hammer and Thor directs it as Order. Thor picks up Captain America’s shield and says that Order has made a grave error in judgment. Order tries to hit Thor, but Thor blocks the punch with Cap’s shield. Thor swats Order with Mjolnir. Order slides right up to where Scarlet Witch is standing. She tells him that they were trying to help him, but that his ignorance clouded his judgment and he hurt her friends. She says that she is through playing nice. Wanda causes two trees to fall over onto Order. Wanda orders him to take them to Chaos now. She tells the others to stand close. Namor says that he had him. Thor says, “Aye, Namor.” Wanda, Order, Thor, Namor, and Ant-Man disappear.

The Avengers reel in pain from the Zodiac Key. Falcon orders Redwing to go. Redwing grabs the key out of Scorpio’s hand and the energy fields are broken. Chaos says, “Freedom” and punches out the two robed men standing beside him. Wasp asks Yellowjacket if he is okay. He says that he will be fine and tells her to go kick Scorpio’s ass. Cap tells Falcon that was good work. Iron Man says that it seems that Scorpio can’t maintain the fields without a direction to the key. He says that his radar indicates thousands of scorpions coming at them. Wasp lets off a sting at Scorpio, but he just palms it and groans. Energy burns from Scorpio’s eyes as he says, “Idiots. My connection to the key is much more than physical. I am one of the chosen.” The energy hits Redwing and the key drops right into Scorpio’s hands. Scorpio says, “One. Shed your false forms, my brotherhood. And have some fun.” The hooded men suddenly appear as some kind of black demon. Cap says to wait for his signal when a voice calls to him. Cap’s shield returns to his hand. Wasp flies next to Cap and says that it is his call. Cap shouts, “Avengers Assemble!” Cap, Thor, Yellowjacket, Wasp, Iron Man, Namor, Warbird, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Falcon, Ant-Man rush toward Scorpio. Wanda and Order walk behind. She-Hulk says, “Brace yourselves, guys… cuz She-Hulk smash!” She hits three of the demons. Thor joins the fight and tells Namor to save some for him. Namor simply replies, “No.” Scorpio blasts Warbird with the Zodiac Key. Panther says that it looks like they are outnumbered. Cap asks when aren’t they outnumbered. Yellowjacket is telling Ant-Man that he can do it. He says that the helmet’s cybernetics are capable, but that he just has to push. Ant-Man seems unsure, but Wasp yells at him to get going. Ant-Man shrinks down among the scorpions and says, “Uh… hey , gang.” Scorpio blasts Iron Man when Scorpio is suddenly overrun by scorpions. Ant-Man says, “Sorry, pal. They’re speaking my language now.”

Scarlet Witch and Vision are breaking up fights between the people from the Earth’s capitals when Chaos’ hand goes through Vision’s chest. He says, “You should not have come here. Any of you.” Wanda tells Chaos to put Vision down. Chaos says, “Him? You mean this , this creation of perfect order. Why should a being like you, a witch who works in chaos, care for this thing of order?” Wanda says, “Because chaos and order belong together.” Wanda lets off her power and starts to warp chaos. She says, “You think your power means anything to me? I work in chaos as others work in clay. I weave together the improbable and unnatural. I control chaos. So I can control you.” Wanda zaps Order and remolds them into the In-Betweener. In-Betweener says, “You are trespassing. This realm was created by me as a sanction, a place for reflection. But it grew a life all its own. Now it must be cleansed. Absolved!” All the demons seem to merge into In-Betweener.

Scorpio tells the Avengers to deal with that. He blasts himself with the Zodiac Key and he and the scorpions disappear. In-Betweener says that the doorway is now closing. The cities and everyone disappear from his realm. In-Betweener floats above the Avengers in Washington DC. Ant-Man looks up and asks how they are supposed to fight a god. Thor says that they fight him with gods. In-Betweener says that there won’t be a fight. He says that there is already enough chaos on this planet. He says that he has returned the cities to their places and the water to the seas. In-Betweener says, “You are a great power for good in this universe, but for every right there is a wrong. Your equal is coming, an evil as strong as your good. Many will die… including one of your own… and the need for avenging will arise.” In-Betweener disappears. At Avengers mansion, some of the Avengers watch the news regarding the return of the cities to their place. The reporter says that tensions remain high as others criticize the violent outbreaks that occurred in the capitals while they were away.

Tony asks Wasp how Hank is. She says that he is recovering, but that all he can do is worry about Jack. She says that if Hank is right that Jack is going to be a real problem soon. Tony says that he knows. Gyrich walks in and Stark asks if he is still there. Gyrich says, “For the moment… and perhaps longer.” Wasp asks where Cap is. Gyrich says that the Secretary General of the United Nations is on the phone. Wasp sees Gyrich’s smile and says that it makes her nervous.

Cap and Falcon are out running and flying around the city. Cap says that he is worried since the world seems to trust the Avengers more than ever, but that the Avengers don’t even trust each other. He says that is going to be his duty to fix that. Cap answers a message from Wasp and says to go ahead with the call. Cap says, “They want to what?”

Scorpio holds the key out over an outline on a table. The outline rises up out of the table to grab the key. Scorpio says that it went better than they expected. He says that the Avengers just think of him as another costumed idiot that is trying to rule or destroy the world. A voice from a heavily shadowed chair says, “You did very well, Mr. Scorpio. Our key has gathered the necessary data on the Avengers. Now next time… next time… the Zodiac strikes together.” The table is surrounded by heavily shadowed chairs.

Avengers Files rating: 8.5 out of 10

Outstanding wrap up to the first story arc of Geoff Johns. The Thor/Order fight was classic and you can really see the Avengers’ effectiveness. Love the set up for the Zodiac to become major players in the Avengers’ Rogues Gallery. I was never much of a fan as they always seemed kind of lame to me, but this new incarnation is something different (perhaps reflecting Libra’s power level as shown in Avengers Forever). 5 out of 5 for the writing. This is Dwyer’s best work to date on the title (or perhaps I’m just glad that he is going).
