Bruce Banner was a ticking bomb waiting to go
off. It's ironic that it was a real gamma bomb that 
really started
Bruce on his path. Beneath the surface of the mild mannered
scientist was the heart of a raging monster who had been building
steam within Banner. From the years of abuse to both his mother
and himself, to his mother's murder by his father, to the
eventual killing of his abusive father Banner had repressed his
emotions in an attempt to prevent himself from acting like his
father. The pain of the abuse coupled with the regression of his
emotions created within Bruce multiple personalities. When that
gamma bomb exploded it gave form to the subconscious
personalities. Who knows what may have happened to Banner had he
not been bathed in the radiation from the gamma bomb those years
back.
