The Beast is the physical representation of Bruce Banner's guilt. "Poor little Betty, she died, boo hoo...Daddy didn't love you...he killed mommy, and you didn't lift a finger to save her. All that guilt...that's what fuels the Beast. The person you are isn't strong enough to deal with this harsh truth.
Banner's constant feeding of the Beast over the years finally lead to a confrontation. Savage Hulk, Mr. Fixit, and the Professor were all needed to prevent the emergence of what might have been the most destructive personality of the Hulk ever seen. Banner's guilt is pretty strong, but maybe not as strong as his self-loathing.
