Dr. Leonard Samson
Gamma-Envy might
be the best way to describe the creation of Doctor Leonard Samson
into Doc Samson. Samson has long been the attempted Hulk curer,
but it seems as if the puzzle of the Hulk will continually elude
him. The first time Samson tried to cure Bruce he kept a part of
his gamma for himself, and later that night fulfilled his
subconscious desire to fullfil his namesake. Samson has ceased
looking for the physical cure, and is now trying to find a way to
help Bruce Banner deal with his multiple personality disorder (a
much more suitable task for a psychiatrist I would think).
Marvel Team-Up #102- flashback- Samson is seen
teaching Dr. Delia Childress to scuba dive and fence with Delia's
father.
Thunderbolts #-1- At a midwestern convocation
on psychiatry Samson gives a lecture about the sanctity of the
relationship between the doctor and patient. Samson says those
who exploit their patient's insecurities commit the worst sin a
psychiatrist can commit. The words fall deafly on the ears of Dr.
Karla Sofen, in the future Moonstone.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #143-Bruce is taken into
the Latvarian embassy. The army surrounds the embassy. Doc Samson
shows up with a haircut. Samson found that cutting his hair
sapped his power much as it did his biblical namesake's. Samson
cut his hair shorter because he was having a hard time adjusting
to his new strength. Doom sends out a Hulk robot. A few tanks get
wrecked and "Hulk" leaves. They shoot "Hulk"
and it blasts into atoms. Everyone mourns Bruce's death. Samson
regrets trying to steal Betty from Bruce.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #144- Samson tries to
make Betty realize that Bruce Banner is really dead.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #146- Doc Samson, Betty,
Jim Wilson, and Ross watch the construction of Project Greenskin.
After a bright light Ross is replaced by an android. The android
Ross berates Samson for hanging around Betty all day.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #147- Hulk leaps off the
plane. The Ross android orders a sonic attack on Hulk. Samson
tells Betty to get inside. Hulk freaks and bursts through the
wall. He shreds the Ross android. Samson said he suspected it,
but was waiting for Hulk's help. Samson and Hulk combine to fight
Leader's humanoids. The humanoids combine to become a giant
humanoid that acts as the Leader. The humanoid blasts Hulk with
gamma rays. Samson steps in front of the ray to protect Hulk. The
feedback causes an explosion near the Leader and disables the
ray. Samson collapses. Hulk defeats the humanoid and leaps off
alone. Samson's gamma was reversed saving the Hulk from the gamma
rays.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #192- Ross, Betty, and
Clay Quartermain take the mindless Glenn Talbot to Dr. Leonard
Samson to see if he might cure him. Later inside the Deepshaft
Radiation Research and Maximum Security Detention Cell Center
Samson gives a somewhat bleak synopsis of Glenn's situation. He
doesn't have his own mind, he doesn't have a replacement mind, he
only has a subconscious. Samson is encountering some blockage
that prevents him from reaching the subconscious. Samson says he
needs Bruce Banner to help him.

leaving so that they can deal with their marital problems. As
Glenn flies away Samson tries to make Betty and places a hand on
her shoulder. Betty tells Samson that just because Glenn is gone
doesn't mean she is up for grabs.

desert man inside with some equipment, and asks if the equipment
brings back any memories. Samson says he stayed behind to help
the stranger try to remember something.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #218- Doc Samson looks
at a paper stated that the Hulk is presumed dead after his fall
from the SHIELD helicarrier. Samson throws the paper down in
disgust. As Samson walks he notices a railroad trestle that has
been damaged. Samson leaps up and braces the tracks for the train
to go over. Once the train goes over Samson runs after the train.
The trestle collapses. Samson rides with the train because he
suspects that it wasn't really an accident. Samson is brooding
when he hears what he thinks is an earthquake. Suddenly the Rhino
knocks the train off the track and over on its side. Rhino bursts
from a car with the package his boss sent him for, but he comes
face to face with Doc Samson. Rhino charges right over Samson,
and keeps going. Samson realizes that he can't go after the Rhino
until he helps all the people hurt in the train wreck. Samson
follows the Rhino's deeply impressed footprints. He tracks Rhino
to a ghost town. Rhino charges at Samson, but Samson leap frogs
over him. Rhino quickly turns and slams into Samson. Samson
pushes a mining cart at Rhino. Rhino barely feels it, but Samson
uses the time to jump on Rhino. Rhino punches Samson into a
barber's chair. Samson spins around and around and jump off into
the Rhino's jaw. Samson goads Rhino by comparing him to the Hulk.
Rhino charges into Samson, and through some rocks. Rhino uses his
horn to flip Samson into a building. Samson gets up and lays into
the Rhino. Dazed the Rhino falls down the well. Samson walks off.

to Gamma Base. Samson tells Ross of his run in with the Rhino.
Ross tells Samson that his mystery man has gone missing.

man isn't found Samson suggests that he walked away the same way
he walked to them. Samson uncovers that they haven't searched the
labs yet because they were locked. Samson says they should
prepare for trouble.

Samson tries to explain to Hulk, but when he doesn't listen
Samson kicks Hulk across the room. Ross sneaks up behind Hulk and
puts an encephalo-helmet, similar to the one in #200, on his
head. The helmet doesn't work, and Hulk rips it off angry. Hulk
decides he is leaving. Ross tries to stop him, but Hulk knocks
him aside. Samson tells Hulk that him leaving will only result in
him being hunted again. Hulk jumps out of the building. When
Samson learns that Hulk is headed for Navapo, New Mexico he tries
to think why he would go there. Quartermain says they should go.
Samson says that Quartermain isn't going anywhere until he
recovers from Leader's brain blast. Samson declares that, since
Gamma Base is as much a civilian installation as a military one,
he is taking over the base while Ross is out. Samson tells a
soldier to get him transport, a compliment of men, and to get
Quartermain to sick bay. When Samson arrives at Desert State
University, Banner's alma mater, Hulk has transformed to Bruce,
and both are haunted by the Socrates statue that says "Know
thyself". Samson suggests that they find out who both Bruce
and Hulk are.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #227- Samson proposes
the idea of therapy for the Hulk to Bruce. Samson has a steel
reinforced psychiatrist's couch. Samson gives Bruce an injection
of gamma-epinephrine, which transforms Bruce into Hulk, but keeps
him calm. Samson puts a REM-integrator on Hulk, and then puts one
on himself allowing him to join Hulk inside his dreams. Hulk gets
up in his dream because he recognizes the place. Hulk walks over
to a house and sees a very young Bruce Banner. Young Bruce burns
his hand on the radiator. As it happens Hulk grabs his hand. Hulk
says he hates this house and destroys it. Next they are
transported to a classroom where Bruce makes a big mess in lab.
Mr. Woodman yells at Bruce. Hulk tells Mr. Woodman to shut up,
and claps his hands. Back in the real world Samson is acting out
Hulk's movements. The hand clapping shatters the observation room
glass. Next the two find themselves in the desert. A smile comes
over Hulk's face as he says that this is where Hulk came to be
free. Samson sees that this is the site of the original gamma
bomb test. Samson watches as the tale unfolds. When the bomb goes
off Samson sees Hulk standing with a limp Bruce Banner in his
hands. Rick tries to stop him, but Hulk grabs Rick. The Avengers,
Thor, Wasp, Ant-Man, Giant-Man, and both the old and new Iron Man
armors, arrive. Hulk crumbles Thor's hammer and tosses him away.
Samson says that with each victory Hulk delves further from
reality into madness. Hulk smashes the two empty Iron Man suits
together. Hulk throws Ant-Man into Giant-man and the ant into
Wasp. Samson points out that the Avengers could have been Hulk's
friends. Hulk says he hates friends, but when Samson asks why
Crakajack, #2, the guy from Hulk #160, Mogol, and Jarella answer
it is because they all die. Hulk says he needs them as they fade.
Hulk shouts his rage. Banner shows up behind Hulk. The two hit
each other causing an explosion. Samson stands next to the
smoking and smashed dream machine and a sleeping Hulk. Samson
realizes that Hulk and Banner aren't just two sides of the same
coin, but actually two separate beings. A technician comes in
with bad news. They gave Hulk to much gamma-epinephrine and the
Hulk won't be able to transform into Bruce for a week.
Incredible Hulk annual #7- Samson watches as
CBS does a live new report on Hulk's treatment at Gamma Base.
After the camera goes off the reporter asks Samson for an
interview with Hulk. Hulk rips open the building saying he wants
out. Samson throws the reporter to safety. Hulk smacks Samson
around a bit until Jim Wilson shows up and calms Hulk down. Later
on Samson yells at the use of the klaxons because he ordered
silence. Angel flies down to Gamma Base asking for help against a
Sentinel, the new Master Mold. Master Mold grabs Angel. Samson
hits its leg, but is next seen flying by the Hulk. Hulk wants to
know what all the noise is about. Hulk sees Master Mold taking
Angel. Hulk hits him, but Master Mold kicks Hulk into a building.
Hulk gets up and leaps onto Master Mold's leg. Samson tries also,
but falls short as Master Mold flies away.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #228- Samson's
misdiagnosis has kept the Hulk around. Hulk stands below a six
ton press testing his strength. Samson determines that there is
no way to test the limits of Hulk's strength. Samson tells Hulk
that he can ease off. Hulk doesn't understand this because Samson
told him to fight the machine. Hulk tears the machine apart.
Samson and Jim Wilson emerge from the wreckage. Jim keeps Hulk
calm by telling Hulk what a good job he did. Samson gets Hulk
some franks and beans. Ross yells at some reporters making him
look bad. Dr. Karla Sofen is brought in to help. Samson meets
Karla Sofen. He remarks about her causing 'a stir' at the Utrecht
(U-Foes?) conference. Later that night Samson arrives, responding
to an alarm, outside the Hulk's building and Dr. Sofen yells out
to Samson that she can handle it. Moonstone had been goading Hulk
and when Hulk finally breaks through the wall all Samson can see
is an enraged Hulk holding a "helpless" and unconscious
Dr. Sofen.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #229- Samson tells Hulk
to put Dr. Sofen down, and come down to talk to him. Hulk is
confused since "metal-lady" is gone. He decides he
might as well listen to Samson. Worried that Hulk might expose
her Sofen blasts a gas line. Hulk pushes Samson and Karla back
before the gas line explodes. Samson tries to tell Hulk how good
he did, but Sofen again blasts Hulk while no one is looking. Hulk
thinks he is being tricked and throws Samson. Hulk starts
trashing tanks. Moonstone arrives on the scene and starts
pretending to be a hero. She fights the Hulk until Samson gets
back. Samson tells her to leave, and she listens since there is
nobody there to pretend for anymore. After Hulk crushes Samson
with a tank Hulk starts going after Moonstone again. Thunderbolt
Ross arrives on the scene with a gamma-blaster. When Moonstone
sees him she loses her concentration and reverts to Karla Sofen.
Moonstone realizes that Ross knows. She transforms back and forth
between Sofen and Moonstone all the time talking to Ross. Ross,
already kinda weary, has a total nervous breakdown. Hulk realizes
that Moonstone is hurting Ross with her words. Samson returns and
Dr. Sofen yells for help. Samson sees Ross down and calls Hulk a
monster. Hulk leaps away.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #230- Doc Samson looks
in on the sleeping General Ross. Samson says he should have known
this was coming. When Quartermain comes in and tells Samson that
a few senators who aren't happy with Samson's job are coming out
Samson asks Dr. Karla Sofen to keep an eye on Ross for him.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #231- Samson greets
Senators Hawk and Eugene K. Stivak. Samson, Hawk, Stivak, Dr.
Sofen, and Quartermain meet in the administration office. Stivak
tells Samson he is sorry about Ross. Samson says that it's only
with Sofen and Quartermain's help that the base is running at
all. Samson admits he is a poor administrator. Hawk asks Samson
what he is going to do about the Hulk. Jim Wilson bursts in and
tells Samson that the Hulk has been spotted in California. Stivak
suggests that he, Jim, and Dr. Sofen go to California to deal
with Hulk while Samson and Hawk remain behind to run Gamma Base.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #233- Samson and Senator
Hawk are contacted by SHIELD and are told that both Stivak and
Sofen (who they believe is the Moonstone) were members of the
Corporation. Samson asks Hawk if this alters his plans to
investigate Gamma Base. Hawk says that no matter what he will
have Samson's job. Samson says that if that's what he wants he
can have the lousy job. Samson says he never wanted the job to
begin with. Samson goes to attend to Ross.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #234- Samson watches the
newly renamed Quasar fly away from Gamma Base from Thunderbolt
Ross' room. Samson wonders to himself if it was the Hulk or
Moonstone that caused Ross' breakdown. Ross starts to mumble
"Betty" in his drug-induced stupor.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #238- Doc Samson with
General Ross in a wheel chair, is walking to their car so he can
leave Gamma Base. Senator Hawk asks Samson what he thinks he is
doing. Samson says his resignation is on his desk along wi th
medical clearance for Ross to leave. Samson says that he signed
on to handle scientific research, but wound up running things
through attrition. Hawk has been complaining about Samson's job
since he got there so this is his oppurtunity to replace him.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #246- Samson brings Ross
his breakfast and tries to interest him in a game of chess. Ross
reacts like a zombie and picks up the black king. As Ross looks
at the piece a news report about the Hulk comes on the radio.
Ross sees the king as a small Hulk. He wings it away into a post.
Samson tries to comfort Ross.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #247- Samson tries to
get Ross' mind of the Hulk. He takes Ross hunting. Ross makes no
reply as Samson talks to him, but allows himself to be lead on
the walk.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #248- Samson tries to
engage Ross in a conversation, but Ross still stares straight
ahead. The dogs start to bark at something. Samson sees that
their "prey" is a monstrous form. Ross starts to shhot
at the shadowed figure claiming it was the Hulk.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #249- Betty, Fred Sloan,
and Rick Jones come to Ross and Samson's cabin, but they're still
out hunting. Samson is chasing after Ross who is chasing whatever
he shot. Samson says they must hurry as the creature is heading
towards the cabin where Betty waits for them. Ross collapses when
he hears this. A centaur crashes into Ross' cabin injured by
Ross' gunshot.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #251- Woodgod arrives to
check on Centaurious. Samson bursts through the wall of the cabin
and tells the "man" to get away from the creature that
caused Ross' collapse. Woodgod leaps at Samson. The other
Changelings that were outside storm into the cabin.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #252- Hulk arrives at
Ross' cabin only to find the placed trashed with only a badly
beaten Doc Samson left there. In a dazed state Samson tells
whoever came in that the Changelings attacked and took Rick,
Fred, Ross, and Betty. When he sees it's the Hulk he says Hulk
cannot go after them. That they must reason with the Changelings.
Hulk said reason is Samson's way, and it didn't stop the
Changelings from pounding him and taking his friends. Samson says
that if Hulk goes after the Changelings they may kill their
captives. Hulk says he will smash whoever hurts his friends.
Samson collapses unconscious as Hulk walks away.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #253- Hulk runs into Doc
Samson and tells Samson that his friends did not want his help.
Hulk says he doesn't care what happens now. Samson says he cares,
and calls Hulk a brainless monster. Hulk gets mad. Hulk attacks.
Samson feels like a dope for provoking the Hulk. Samson charges
at Hulk with a tree, but Hulk smashes it. Siren figures out that
Leoninus poisoned the potion she was carrying for the centaur
Ross shot. Ross and the others are to die for the crime, and
Leoninus uses it as leverage to take leadership of the
Changelings. Siren flies and stops Hulk and Samson's fight. She
tells them their friends are in trouble and to follow her.
Leoninus is about to slay Woodgod as Siren arrives with Hulk and
Samson and accuses Leoninus. A fight breaks out, as the other
Changelings are now back with Woodgod. Hulk tells Samson to look
at Elephant-Man and Cat-Man, and remember them the next time he
calls Hulk a monster. Samson thinks to himself what a complex
point the Hulk just made. Samson defeats the panther Changeling
as the good Changelings defeat the bad ones. Samson recalls the
experiments held by David and Ellen Pace (actually the
Changeling's creators) and thinks to himself that he needs to
decide if he is a scientist or a superhero. Samson, Betty, and
Rick all apologize to Hulk. Ross thinks them all mad, but Betty
tries to calm him down. Rick, Betty, and Samson try to make Hulk
feel wanted, but again Ross starts hollering at Hulk. Hulk grabs
him by the throat. Samson, Betty, and Rick all shout for him to
put Ross down. Hulk says his friends always stick up for Hulk's
enemies. Hulk says that when Ross gets well he is going to right
back to hunting the Hulk, and his friends will just stand by and
let it happen. Hulk says he doesn't need friends like that and
leaps away.
Marvel Team Up #102- Samson is at a conference
at Empire State University about "Gamma Therapy Treatment
for the Mentally Ill" when he hears that an additional
speaker has been added, Dr. Delia Childress. Delia says gamma
therapy should not be used, and uses the Hulk as an example why.
Samson says that Hulk was created by an uncontrolled radiation.
He shows that controlled it can produce an example like him. He
lifts the stage with one hand. Suddenly Samson's strength is out
of control. The auditorium clears. Spider-Man arrives and scares
off some men that were pointing a ray projector that was
affecting Samson's strength. Dr. Childress comes to rub Samson's
nose in it, but he says he was manipulated. Peter Parker asks
Samson to speak at his class. Samson agrees, but first asks Dr.
Childress to lunch for old times sake. At lunch Childress yells
at Samson for their past when he and her father controlled her
every move. She storms off. As Samson is speaking at Peter's
class his strength starts to go haywire. Samson leaps out of the
building. Peter changes into Spidey and follows. He next sees
Samson lifting the entire university building off the ground
causing the two guys with the projector to fall out the window.
Spidey grabs the guys while Samson sets down the building. Samson
tells Spidey he thinks Parker might have set him up. While
they're talking the Rhino runs by and plows into Samson. Spidey
tussles with Rhino while Samson recovers. Samson sees Delia
aiming the projector at him weakening him. He asks for her help,
but she just hits him with her cane. Rhino defeats Spidey, and
Childress takes Samson as her prisoner. Childress works for AIM,
and she wants to determine how Samson got his powers so they can
duplicate it. Spidey traces their location, and disables the
pillars that are sapping Samson's strength. Samson pulls the
pillars down. Samson grabs Rhino's leg and swings him around
smashing his head into a cave wall. Childress tries to kill
herself with electrical wires, but Samson takes the charge. She
asks why, and he tells her as she passes out that he loves her.
He vows to cure her.
Micronauts #29
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #256- Samson is with
Ross as he reads the headline that the government has cut the
funding for Gamma Base. Samson thinks how this might cause Ross
to relapse.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #257- Samson stands at
Ross' side as he watches Gamma Base disassembled. The ground
starts to shake as Ross argues with a senator about Gamma Base.
Samson says the ground is supposed to be geologically stable.
Samson and the others see Glenn Talbot stealing the War-Wagon. As
Talbot takes off Samson tries to get someone to track Talbot, but
as the base was being taken apart no such technology is working.
Incredible Hulk annual #11- Samson is attending
a conference where Unus the Untouchable is being displayed in
chains. Unus breaks free, and Samson goes to stop him. Samson
tries to hit Unus, but his punch bounces back on him and knocks
him through a wall. Samson gets back up, and Unus says that if he
wants to try again he is welcome. Samson leaps at Unus, and again
is bounced backwards through a window to the outside. Unus
follows Samson out. Samson pulls up a chunk of concrete up.
Samson bounces Unus into the air with the rock. Samson keeps
bouncing Unus until he is almost into orbit. Samson says he can't
stop it from happening with Unus' force field up. Unus lowers his
force field and Samson catches him.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #277- Samson and General
Ross watch as the U-Foes send out a transmission of them holding
an unconscious Bruce Banner. Samson says that they need to get
the army to do something. Ross says he can have the band strike
up a victory march, but short of that he doesn't see why they
should do anything. Samson asks if Ross has no compassion for
Bruce Banner. Ross says he has a little for Bruce, but that since
he is still linked to the Hulk he holds him partly responsible
for Glenn Talbot's death. Samson recognizes the location of the
transmission.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #278- Doc Samson arrives
at Gamma Base after watching the new Banner Hulk defeat the
U-Foes. He finds Betty sitting there among the rubble. Betty
tells Samson not to act so shocked since he has fought the Hulk
and felt the power. Samson remarks about how he once diagnosed
the Bruce and Hulk as dual personalities, but it seems the
conflict within him is gone now. Betty says that it's wonderful
for everybody but her. Samson tries to comfort her by saying he
knows how she must feel. Betty pulls her new rude and arrogant
attitude and pulls away from Samson. She says nobody knows how
she feels because even she doesn't know how she feels.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #279- Samson stands with
Betty as the whole world gathers to honor the Hulk who has
received a presidential pardon.
Contest of Champions #1- out of place- Hulk
says that he is going to smash Doc Samson when Doc notices a
strange red glow surrounding them. The two disappear. Samson
finds himself in a gigantic room with literally every superhero
on Earth. Samson stands near the X-Men and Inhumans. Grandmaster
and his mystery opponent arrive and say that they will not
release Earth from the suspended animation that they have placed
it in unless the heroes of Earth agree to help them play a game.
Samson is not chosen as a pawn for either team.
Contest of Champions #2- hehind the scenes- out
of place- The Grandmaster's team wins the first section, but The
Unknown wins the second. Samson stands around with the other
heroes who are waiting.
Contest of Champions #3- behind the scenes- out
of place- The Grandmaster's team wins the third section.
Grandmaster wins the fourth and final section. Samson is among
the heroes as all the pawns are brought back to the arena where
Grandmaster is declared the winner. The Unknown is revealed as
Death. Grandmaster sacrifices himself to resurrect Collector.
Marvel Two-In-One annual #7- Samson is trying
to treat a patient who has been seeing little green men when
Proja, an alien promoter teleports into Samson's office. The man
runs screaming from the room despite the fact that Proja is
purple, not green. Samson is teleported to a gym where all the
"recruits" are gathered. Samson and the others look
around at the equipment that is designed for people of their
strength level. As Hulk starts to get antsy Champion introduces
himself. Champion says that he travels from planet to planet
looking for challenges, but never has he tasted defeat. He hopes
the champions of Earth might provide him some sport. The
"recruits" don't care for being pawns and attack
Champion. Champion releases his Power Primordial. Champion says
that they must fight him or he will release his power upon their
world. They decide they must fight. Each "recruit" is
assigned a trainer. Samson's trainer explains that the punching
machine is alive and thinking. Samson says he has a hard time
believing that. The sparing begins and Samson is knocked out in
two punches. Samson is disqualified and finds himself teleported
back to his office.
Avengers #252- Doc Samson watches a file on
himself with the Vision. The tape says that Samson's power level
is about 70% of the Hulk's. Vision offers Doc Samson a position
on the Avengers. Samson says he is flattered, but doesn't think
he is cut out for the life of a hero. He says he has also
accepted a position teaching at Northwestern University. Vision
says that he is considering making Samson the leader of a
mid-western branch of the Avengers. Samson says that
administration isn't his strong point. Vision says not to make up
his mind so fast, and gives Samson a tour of the mansion. On the
tour Samson meets Starfox. Starfox and Samson share their
concerns over the anti-mutant hysteria. As Samson leaves he
wonders if he made a mistake turning Vision down, but ultimately
concludes he was right.

Carolyn Parmenter's funeral. Suddenly LaRoquette starts verbally
attacking Bruce and Samson. Samson says he was only defending
himself from them, and id Laroquette is looking to blame someone
he should blame himself. The other Hulkbusters have to hold
Laroquette back. The next morning Samson is with Quartermain when
they find that Bruce's clothes were all torn up while he slept.
Samson is relieved that the morning's power outage was the result
of a new prisoner, Zzzax. Samson says he is in no shape to fight
the Hulk. Samson gets a guest. He goes out to see Polly. Polly
tells Samson that his tenure at Northwestern University has been
rescinded. Polly storms out, and Clay says that's a tough one.
Samson says he forgot all about Northwestern. Quartermain says
they might have a job for him. Samson agrees to come on for the
investigation if the Hulk is really gone. Quartermain opens a
door to find a SHIELD agent punching Bruce. Samson objects, but
it's merely a test to try and trigger a transformation. SHIELD
says it seems as if Bruce is cured of the Hulk. Samson says he is
out a job again, but offers Bruce his congratulations. Later that
night a Hulk is seen coming from Bruce's quarters. They track the
Hulk and find Bruce in tattered clothing. Suddenly a Hulk drops
from the sky and takes Bruce away. Samson says that it can't be
Bruce's Hulk so it must be a new Hulk.
Incredible Hulk vol., 2 #326- Samson tries to
calm Betty down as she panics about Bruce being grabbed by the
new Hulk. Later when SHIELD gives Betty the bad news about
General Ross' mind being absorbed by Zzzax Samson suggests that
they try capturing Zzzax to restore Ross' mind.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #329- The SHIELD guys
ask Samson's opinion of Bruce's molecular structure. Samson says
he doesn't believe the new Hulk was Bruce. Samson can tell that
Bruce is lying when he says he doesn't know anything about the
new Hulk. Samson tries to continue questioning Bruce, but Betty
enters and runs to Bruce. Samson sits in as Quartermain tries to
get the Hulkbusters to re-up against the new Hulk. Laroquette
takes exception with Samson being there, but decides to stick
around because "there are scores to be settled here" as
he looks at Samson.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #330- Samson is brought
down to give Betty some help. When Ross woke up from his coma he
decided to kill Rick Jones and Bruce Banner. Either the shock or
perhaps Ross' remaining electricity powers stunned her. While
Betty is about to unburden herself to Samson his body is taken
over by a mind-controlling parasite. Samson catches Betty as she
faints. The creature has Samson carry Betty to the gamma
equipment. He seals off all the exits on the base. Everyone sees
Samson with the creature. Rick turned into the Hulk out of the
room, but charges in. Samson charges at Hulk. He hits Hulk to the
ground. Rick Hulk charges back, but is knocked down again. The
Hulkbusters jump Samson, but he shakes them off. The creature
leaps for Betty, as a hostage, but Bruce dives in front of her.
Samson is knocked out on the floor. While he was out Ross
sacrificed himself to fry the brain creature.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #380-flashback- The District Attorney shows Samson some tapes of Crazy
Eight. He explains that she uses a sword and has superhuman
strength. She had been killing underworld types and nobody was
really trying to catch her, but one day she cut the head off
Senator Ray Hartwell. Wonder Man brought her in. Samson sees the
Senator’s widow on the tape beaten up. The DA asks Samson to
go and determine whether she knows right from wrong. Samson goes
to talk to Crazy Eight. Crazy Eight asks Samson what it will take
for him to say she is nuts as she starts taking her shirt off.
She asks Lenny if he ever made it with a nutso. Samson tells her
to stop. She says her father abused her when she was seventeen.
Samson says her file says her father died when she was nine. She
says that maybe it was the milkman or the football team then. She
says there is no reason save that she likes to take the trash
out. Crazy Eight shows Samson the infinity symbol she carved on
her first victim. She wanted to be Infinity, but because of a
dumb cop she became Crazy Eight. Samson asks her if she thinks
that she is crazy. Crazy Eight puts her cigarette out on her
hand. She gets real close to Samson and says that she is
crazy…crazy about him. The next day Samson testifies that he
believes that Crazy Eight knows right and wrong, and that she is
unrepentant.

Marvel Super-Heroes vol. 3 #6 - Doc Samson is
giving a lecture. He has to address the gamma issue, but asks if
there are any questions on the subject of his lecture. Colossus
and Rogue attend Samson’s lecture because of a newspaper
feature talking about how another gamma powered being, the
Abomination, was kidnapped by a Sentinel. Rogue asks a question
about the Abomination. Samson starts to answer, but he is
interrupted by a Sentinel that teleports onto the scene behind
him. The Sentinel picks Samson up. Samson punches the
Sentinel’s face, but without much affect. The Sentinel
starts to squeeze Samson into unconsciousness. Colossus charges
the Sentinel, but he gets swatted through the wall for his
trouble. Rogue touches Samson’s skin to absorb his strength.
Rogue hits the Sentinel and gets it to drop Samson. The Sentinel
shoots out a flame. Colossus absorbs it for Rogue. The Sentinel
picks up Samson and teleports out. Later after the X-Men go off
to find the Sentinels Storm remains behind. She recalls a
location where they study solar flares. The Sentinels tried to
use solar flares to sterilize mankind. She goes there alone and
finds Doc Samson and Abomination in tubes. Storm is defeated by
Sentinels.
Marvel Super-Heroes vol 3 #7- Storm wakes up in the tube next to Abomination and
Samson. She hears that they kidnapped Abomination and Samson
because of the gamma power within solar flares, and they will
enable them to control them. The Sentinels inquire whether their
plan will simply create more gamma beings. Number Two says that
its findings show that everyone who gains gamma powers from gamma
radiation was related at some point in their family tree so there
is only a tiny statistic that will inherent powers. The
experiment on regular humans what the effects will be. After they
die the Sentinels remove the dead bodies and put Abomination and
Samson inside. Storm breaks free and starts a rainstorm. The rain
wakes Samson up. Samson saves Ororo by tipping one Sentinel into
another. Storm wakes Abomination up also. Abomination tears into
the Sentinels. Abomination is lost in a crevice with Sentinel
number two. The X-Men show up and Havok destroys them all. Samson
leaves with the X-Men.

Amazing Spider-Man #381- Hulk is going through
customs when he is asked if he has anything to declare. Hulk
declares that the delay is annoying him. Hulk turns around to
find Doc Samson there. Samson says that the Pantheon told him
where he would be returning from Scotland. Hulk says that he was
hoping to relax, but he supposes Samson isn’t going to let
him. Samson tells Hulk that scientists have developed a gamma
“virus” that releases repressed emotions. Samson
figured that the demonstration might be applicable to Hulk’s
mood swings. Hulk tells Samson that when people mess with gamma
rays people turn into Hulks, Abominations, Leaders, and Samsons.
He tells Samson that if he goes within a mile of that
demonstration they have planned that he is nuts. Hulk storms off.
Later Samson watches as Dr. Pollack explains that he will
administer the gamma virus to a diagnosed schizophrenic’s
brain. The virus will then release the hatred and anger that he
can’t admit to himself that he has. The gamma virus
releases, but instead of going to patient it starts to try to
escape the containment cell they’re in. Samson leaps onto
the containment’s wall, but the virus breaks through. Samson
is blown away, but he is infected with the gamma virus. Samson
starts to rampage as the virus releases all of Samson’s pent
up hostility. Samson leaps at Spider-Man, but lands on a machine.
Samson throws the machine. Spidey webs Samson, but Samson easily
tears through it. Samson tells Spider-Man to get away. Samson
says he doesn’t want to kill Spider-Man, but Banner. Samson
hits the wall Spidey is on, and it collapses on him. Samson says
he can smell Hulk and starts to leap after him. Samson lands on
Hulk. Hulk pounds and pounds on Samson. Suddenly Spider-Man leaps
on Hulk’s arm. Spider-Man says that Hulk is going to kill
Samson. Samson has time to get up, and he leaps tackling Hulk.
Suddenly the virus transfers from Samson to Hulk. Hulk gets up
with glowing green eyes.
Amazing Spider-Man #382- Hulk
smashes the ground and knocks over Spider-Man and Samson.
Spider-Man says the virus was designed to release repressed
anger. Samson says that Hulk has that to spare. Spider-Man leaps
and hits Hulk. When Hulk turns Samson leaps onto his back trying
to choke him out. Hulk pulls Samson off, and then bounces him off
the closest wall. Hulk pounces on Samson. Spidey dumps two entire
web cartridges on Hulk. Spider-Man says they ought to get Hulk to
Empire State University since the Torch already trashed half the
campus with a nova burst. Spidey tells Samson to go try and see
if the scientists have any ideas. Samson leaps away. Samson leaps
into the research lab. He finds out that the scientists had not
yet developed a cure for the germ they developed. Later Hulk
finally has Spidey down and cornered. Samson returns and knocks
Hulk into the building. Samson tells Spidey that the scientists
say the germ should have burned itself up by now. Spidey says
maybe Hulk’s dark side refuses to let it go. Samson says
that given the choice between right and wrong or even the choice
between right and legal Hulk chooses right. Hulk leaps back out.
Samson and Spidey try to hold their own, but Hulk keeps getting
the best of them. Hulk has Samson out cold. Spider-Man tells Hulk
to fight the virus. Hulk screams and the virus burns out. Hulk
says he is impressed with Spider-Man. He tells Samson to listen
to him next time and stay away from gamma radiation. Hulk leaves
before the lawsuits start. Samson watches Hulk leave. He tells
Spidey that he can help Hulk. He just needs to make Hulk realize
that he needs that help.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #412- Samson stops in
front of Betty’s apartment. He sees Bruce’s silhouette
in the window. He says that Hulk isn’t dodging him this
time. Samson says that nothing short of a full-blown super
villain attack is going to stop them from having a session.
Suddenly the Bi-Beast appears and punches Samson in the face.
Samson says, “Me and my big mouth.” Samson goes flying
through the window of Marlo and Betty’s apartment.

Hulk, but when he sicced Hulk on Cap they went ballistic. Samson
says that they would trust him even less if they knew about
Trans-Sabal. Rick asks if Samson is threatening him. Samson says
that he will do what he needs to.

Double Edge Alpha- The Punisher has finally be
captured by SHIELD. He is being held below ground. Later Samson
is lowered down into Frank’s cell. Samson says that he had
SHIELD personnel withdraw to the level above him to insure
privacy. Punisher recognizes Samson as a shrink. Samson says that
he wants to help. Punisher hits Samson and tries to leap on the
withdrawing platform Samson came down on. Samson leaps into
Punisher. Punisher keeps pounding on Samson. Samson says his
punches are having no effect and that he is having a hard time
holding back. Samson beats Punisher to the ground. He shows Frank
that his needle is not truth serum, but an experimental drug that
can regress Frank to a time before he was the Punisher and before
his family was killed. Samson says that they can undo the damage
done to his mind. Franks agrees on one condition. Later Samson
goes and puts roses on the Castle family ‘s burial site. The
Carbone family follows Samson back to the SHIELD building where
Punisher is being held. Back in Frank’s cell Samson is
regressing him. Just at the point where Samson has him to the day
of his family’s murder a character named Spook enters with a
picture he doctored to make it look like it was Nick Fury was the
killer of the Castle family. Samson forcibly removes Spook, but
by then the image is implanted in Frank’s mind. The Corbone
family drops a bomb on the building. Punisher’s cell is
smashed. Samson is holding up debris. Punisher starts crawling
out. Samson shouts after him, but Punisher keeps going. Samson
gets up to the surface just as Punisher is getting away. Samson
says that Punisher needs the antidote for the experimental drug
or he will develop acute psychosis. Fury arrives. Samson tells
Fury that right now Punisher is running around and in his mind he
thinks that his family was just killed.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #433- behind the scenes-
Fury talks on the phone with Samson. Fury says that he
doesn’t want Samson mixing in the Frank Castle business
anymore because they don’t see eye to eye on it. Fury tells
Samson that he is a riot and hangs up. Later Agent Jones asks
Fury what Samson said. Fury tells her that Samson said he would
be a big hit in the kingdom of the blind.Incredible Hulk vol. 2
#440- Samson enters the screen room with Major Matt Talbot,
Glenn’s nephew. Talbot is watching a fight with Hulk and
Thor. Talbot thanks Samson for coming. Samson says that he was
given no choice as Talbot sent an armed escort. Talbot asks
Samson if the Hulk looks as angry as he has ever seen him. Samson
says more so perhaps. He says that Hulk’s failsafe
hasn’t kicked in and that worries him. Samson also remarks
at how out of control Thor looks. Talbot tells his men to take
them down and drop “the bomb” on Thor and Hulk. Samson
tells him not to do it. Talbot says that it is already done.
Samson stands aghast as the bomb detonates. Talbot starts to
gloat, but Samson tells him to shut up and knocks him down.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #440- She-Hulk is
sunbathing as she returns a phone call from Doc Samson. She asks
“Lenny” if Hulk has turned up at the original gamma
bomb test site yet. Samson says not o call him Lenny, and that
Hulk hasn’t shown yet. Samson says he has heard of some
strange things about Luma, a town near the site, so he is there
to check if Hulk is around. Suddenly a shadow being attacks
Samson and he yells out to She-hulk that the shadows are trying
to kill him. Samson is dragged off into the shadows.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #441-
Samson wakes up tied to a chair. A figure in the shadows asks why
he has been following him. Samson asks if that is Bruce. He rips
out of the ropes, but his captor doesn’t want him to get up
so the ropes reform around him and tie him to the chair again.
The figure says that he could kill Samson with a thought so he
had better answer his questions. Samson explains that he
doesn’t even know who his captor is, and that he was looking
for Bruce. His captor asks Samson why he still feels a need for
“her”. Samson wants to know who “her” is. His
captor rephrases the question as to why anyone with omnipotent
powers would need anyone. Samson says that omnipotence is to
leave humanity behind, and he doesn’t seem to want that.
Samson says that if there is going to be any trust between them
it would be nice if he weren’t hog-tied. His captor smashes
him into the ceiling. When he gets back his captor says he
doesn’t want trust he wants fear. Samson’s captor asks
what chance a relationship has today. Samson asks what he thinks.
Molecule Man emerges from the shadows and says that he hates when
shrinks ask that. She-Hulk punches through the wall. Molecule Man
sees She-Hulk’s silhouette and thinks it’s Marsha.
She-Hulk grabs Molecule Man. Samson tries to warn her, but he is
too late. The area they are all on suddenly shoots hundreds of
feet into the air. Molecule Man starts raving. He calms down and
says that She-Hulk really does remind him of Marsha. Samson tries
to talk sense to Owen. Owen decides through Samson’s words
that he has to try and win Marsha back. He shakes both their
hands and walks away on the air. She-Hulk looks down and says
that she thinks they could survive a fall from that height, but
that whoever they landed on would be dead. She-Hulk asks Lenny if
he has a pinochle deck of cards on him. Samson sighs and tells
her not to call him Lenny.
Hulk annual ‘97- Samson sits listening to
tapes of the hypnosis therapy from Hulk #377 and tries to figure
out where he messed up. Samson asks an absent Hulk how he is
supposed to help him if Hulk won’t even help himself. Samson
answers a knock on his door to find Hector and Atalanta there.
Hector says that they’ve never been formally introduced and
then does so. Hector tells Samson that they are not there to
fight, and then tells Samson that Bruce Banner has a son and that
they need his help. Elsewhere the Shiar sense that capturing a
fugitive Elamron keys on the boy who is supposedly Banner’s
son. Cassie tells Samson that the boy is a genetic match. Samson
says that David can’t be Bruce’s son. He says Betty
miscarried her baby. The Pantheon said she must have lied and
given it up for adoption. They want Samson to help the kid cope
and keep an eye out for manifesting superpowers. Samson wants to
David alone. Samson thinks to himself that the boy could be his
last chance to reach Bruce. David asks if Samson is his father
because they say that the Hulk is his father. Samson says it
isn’t but that he could dye his hair purple if it made David
more comfortable. Suddenly Jason is knocked through the wall.
Jason says that the intruder is unstoppable. He tells Samson to
grab David and that Prometheus will take them to Banner.
Prometheus’ car is destroyed, but he tells Samson to keep
going without him. Samson grabs the kid and runs. Samson bounces
off Hulk’s chest. Samson introduces “Bruce” to
David and tells him that he is Bruce’s son. Hulk pauses for
a second. He says he is pleased to meet him, and then tells them
both to get lost. Samson says that he can’t be that
unfeeling. Hulk says that apparently Samson has a hearing
problem. Suddenly Gladiator and Lady Sibyl arrive. Gladiator says
it is better that Hulk not care for the boy because he is
claiming him for the Shiar empire. Samson says that they cannot
claim a child they have no right to. Gladiator says that it
isn’t a child, but a changeling. Samson says he has seen the
genetic tests, but Sibyl says that a changeling is very thorough
even to losing itself in the life. She says that Hulk most likely
encountered Elamron posing as a Troyjan, and that it became
Hulk’s “son” after dying. Gladiator says that is
enough and that the child will be destroyed for crimes he has
been convicted of. Janis tries to intercede, but Gladiator grabs
her by the neck. Hulk flashback to his father holding his mother
by the neck. Hulk leaps onto Gladiator. Sibyl freezes Samson,
Janis, and David until the fight is over. Samson’s body
shields David during the fight, but knocks Samson out. Later
Samson says that he was unable to find the “boy” , but
sure that it must have fled that form to avoid living life with
that as a future.

Heroes Return: The Return #2- Samson stands
with Cary St. Lawrence. He tells Hulk that nobody wants to hurt
him, but he must surrender to them because he is causing citywide
blackouts. Hulk says to leave him alone and leaps away. Samson
joins the other superheroes that stand against the Hulk.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #462- Doc Samson tries
to talk Clinton into pardoning Hulk again. Clinton says no way,
but Samson points out that Hulk is responsible for bringing the
heroes back to our universe. Clinton says that Hulk’s
transformations are unpredictable and that he has enough
controversy surrounding him right now. Clinton says that the last
time Hulk was pardoned it was a disaster.
Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #465-
Betty and Cary St. Lawrence enter the room as Bruce, Tony Stark,
Reed Richards, General Ross, and Doc Samson sit playing poker and
smoking cigars. Betty fakes everyone out when she asks Bruce if
four of a kind is good. The four were four hearts and one club
from his busted flush. The game breaks up. Later Samson tries to
talk to them, but Bruce just lost his last piece of clothing in
the strip poker game with Betty. Samson says he has to get out
more and wonders what She-Hulk is doing.

Doc Samson watches over as Betty lies in the infirmary with
massive radiation poisoning. Ross enters. Samson tells Ross that
they need a miracle. Ross runs out and starts hitting the Hulk.
He tells Banner to get out there are help Betty. Samson stands in
front of Ross as Hulk prepares to smash Ross. Samson talks Banner
out. Samson tells Bruce that he can do it. Bruce says that makes
one of them. Later Samson tells Bruce that his team has arrived
as Bruce is talking to Betty. Later still Samson watches as Bruce
is working combining his old gamma ray machine from the cave with
equipment Cary tried to use to drain Hulk’s gamma radiation.
Banner says that they have to drain the radiation and fix the
damage. Ross asks what kind of radiation it is. Bruce says gamma
and then asks Ross if he is happy to have his blame placed. Ross
hits Bruce, but Samson tells them both to shut up for
Betty’s sake. Finally Bruce starts the machine. The process
seems to be working. They complete full cellular regeneration and
Betty seems fine when all of a sudden she drops dead. They try to
revive her, but her pulse and brain functions have stopped. Betty
drops Bruce’s wedding ring on the ground as they pronounce
her dead.

Doc Samson is interviewing Eliot Franklin, the Clown. The Clown
is rambling about the Ringmaster setting them up, and their new
“m.o.” (namely putting on black clothes and robbing
banks- very clever stuff). He tells Samson how Bruce got involved
with two goons to get Marlo out of trouble with them (how he
knows this I’ve no idea). They run into Bruce and the goons
as they are both trying to rob the same Las Vegas counting room.
Bruce hulks out. He fights with the Circus of Crime. Just when
Hulk has the Clown’s head in his hand Hulk is smothered by
Princess Python’s snake. Instead of killing the snake with
absolutely no thought at all (like he usually does) Hulk decides
instead to lose. Even Doc Samson ( a character in the book)
can’t believe this tripe. Clown says he had a crazy
impossible plan.

Doc Samson begins to doubt the validity of the Clown’s
story. Samson finishes listening to Clown’s poorly written,
boring, and implausible story.
