Count Nefaria

Count Nefaria has always been a dangerous individual. As head of the Maggia Nefaria was a master strategist. He was a normal man who almost managed to turn the entire nation of America against the Avengers. Nefaria is supremely confident in himself and his abilities. Money and power have been in his family for generations and Nefaria is simply behaving the way he feels that he should. Now in addition to the benefits that birth granted him Nefaria has manufactured for himself a power that allows him to fight the entire team of Avengers. Power, intelligence, confidence. You would think nothing could stop this guy...well maybe except those stinking heroes. They always ruin the good time.

Avengers #13-The Avengers stop another of the Maggia's crimes. At an emergency meeting of the American division of the Maggia they discuss what they can do. When they fret what The Count will do when he hears the Electro-Ray signal flashes one of the people lays his hands upon the electro-disc. On the other side of the world Count Nefaria pushes a button and a three dimensional image of his American representative appears before him. The man knows he is in for "The Punishment", and starts to beg claiming he is loyal. Nefaria asks what good he is if he can't even get a simple fur heist done. The man again begs trying to tell Nefaria that nobody can stop the Avengers. Nefaria views it as a challenge. Nefaria pushes a button and cuts the man off from the Maggia with nobody to turn to. Wasp reads how Count Nefaria has plans to move his castle to America. Nefaria uses his companies to move his castle to the New Jersey palisades overlooking the Hudson River. The Count then opens his castle to the public with the proceeds going to charity. He invites the Avengers along saying they will be a big draw. Nefaria greets the Avengers himself. He assigns each of them quarters to "freshen up". While in their rooms Nefaria uses his Time Transcender Beam to freeze time for the Avengers. He makes three-dimensional versions of all of them. Nefaria then causes their images to appear before the press. He has them tell the press that they have decided that they are taking over the country. When the United States refuses the "Avengers" declare war on America. With the country outraged a reward is posted for the Avengers' capture: dead or alive. Rick Jones and the Teen Brigade get suspicious when Cap never comes back for them. Rick and the Geek Brigade find Nefaria's control room, but Nefaria sees them and sicks the Maggia goons on them. He has them thrown into the dungeon. Nefaria tells the Avengers the charity function was cancelled and sends them out not knowing they are wanted criminals. Nefaria tells Cap that the Geek Brigade is looking around his castle. Nefaria called the army and they arrive to capture the Avengers. The Avengers escape and learn they are wanted. They seem to remember feeling hazy after Nefaria's castle and decide to return there. One of the Geek Brigade pulls out a pocket ham radio they had. Nefaria intercepts Jones' message and confines the Brigade by putting them in a dungeon filled with a substance that will put them in a state of perpetual suspended animation. He then closes the walls up so that they can't move without touching the substance. The Avengers return and Thor steps on a disc that completely paralyzes him. Giant-Man touches Thor's shoulder and is paralyzed too. Then Wasp touches Giant-Man. Iron Man is paralyzed while trying to get in above. Cap swings in through a window and doesn't touch the castle. Cap is attacked by Maggia goons. Cap ditches the goons and frees the Geek Brigade. Rick shows Cap the antidote because Nefaria had been taunting him with it. Rick takes it to free the others. Cap signals a passing Destroyer on the Hudson, but is then captured by a ray. Nefaria gloats to Cap, but then Iron Man comes crashing through the wall. When cornered Nefaria tries to explain he didn't hurt anyone. He tells them what he did. The general overhears and arrests Nefaria. Nefaria is to be deported. Nefaria fears punishment by the Maggia.

Tales of Suspense #67- In a desolate section of the coast of Norway Count Nefaria hides in an abandoned Nazi bunker. He thinks how he was removed as leader of the Maggia. He also thinks how he spent his fortune to create the machine before him. He says he will no longer be known as Count Nefaria, but as the Master of Dreams. Nefaria finds Iron Man first and decides to get revenge on him first. Suddenly Iron Man finds himself on the Brooklyn Bridge surrounded by the Unicorn and the Crimson Dynamo. Iron Man beats them and awakens from his dream. Now Iron Man knows it is a dream, but he doesn't know that thanks to Nefaria's machine if he dies in his dream he will die for real. Later Nefaria activates the machine again. Iron Man is attacked by Crimson Dynamo, Jack Frost, and Gargantus. Iron Man is in trouble but figures he'll wake up soon. Iron Man's nature won't let him quit. Iron Man is attacked by the Melter and the Black Knight. Nefaria is getting frustrated because Iron Man keeps fighting back. Nefaria adds too much power to his machine for a second assault and the machine explodes.

Tales of Suspense #68- Morgan, Tony Stark's cousin contacts Tony for help. Count Nefaria offers to void Morgan's immense gambling debt if he will help him destroy Tony Stark. Morgan accepts. Morgan plants a bomb on Tony's way to his date. Instead of calling in help Tony becomes Iron Man. Iron man discovers the bomb has a thermonuclear device in it. Iron Man leaves and Tony calls in the bomb squad. When they get there the bomb is gone. The cops are annoyed, but before they leave Stark yells out that he sees a spaceman. The spaceman was Morgan using Nefaria's holographic projection so an hour later when they find nothing Stark starts to doubt himself. Pepper and Happy suggest a vacation. The press arrives to talk to Tony just as he calls for Happy to come in and see another spaceship. The press think maybe Tony has gone insane. One senator intends to introduce a resolution to take Stark's government contracts. Iron Man returns to the scene of the bomb and spaceman. Coincidentally Iron Man is attacked by REAL spacemen. Stark drives them off and sees Morgan there. Morgan is forced to admit that there really were Spacemen there.

Uncanny X-Men #22- Count Nefaria has gathered up the remnants of his Maggia gang. He also employs five former super-villains to be his lieutenants. Nefaria is ready to make the world fear the name of Nefaria, but first he decides he'd like to recruit the outcast team of X-Men for his criminal empire. Nefaria orders his super-villains to capture, but not harm the X-Men. Plantman captures Marvel Girl. Scarecrow captures Angel. The Porcupine captures the Beast. Eel and Unicorn capture Iceman and Cyclops. They are all put into Nefaria's dungeon. Nefaria chastises Eel and Unicorn for stunning Cyclops and Iceman. Unicorn says his patience is limited. Nefaria's goons say that Cyclops and Iceman are okay. Nefaria leaves knowing his lieutenants all don't trust each other enough to rebel. Unicorn thinks he'll be the one. Nefaria visits the X-Men and offers them membership in the Maggia. They refuse but Nefaria tells them they will work for him whether they want to or not. He says he will have them steal the entire capital of the United States and ransom it for 100 million dollars.

Uncanny X-Men #23- Nefaria encloses all of Washington DC within a bubble. After giving people enough time to realize that the bubble cannot be broken Nefaria sends three dimensional images (a la Avengers #13) to a special meeting. The images claim they are responsible for the bubble, and that the government has three hours to give them certificates worth 100 million dollars before the dome burns up all the oxygen in the dome. Marvel Girl manages to get Cyclops' eye restraint off. He frees the others and they are contacted mentally by Professor X. The Senate agrees to Nefaria's terms. The X-Men agree to join Nefaria and make the pick up. Nefaria reminds them that only he can turn off the dome in case they think of betraying him. The X-Men drive a milk truck in through a special location. Nefaria also sends his five lieutenants to watch the X-Men. Nefaria doesn't suspect that his lieutenants plan to take the 100 million for themselves. Professor X sees Nefaria make a temporary opening. He plans to take the money and return to Central Europe and rebuild the Maggia. The X-Men make the pick up. Once outside the dome again the Unicorn, leader of the lieutenants, demands the money. They fight and Unicorn winds up running with the money. Nefaria creates the illusion of tanks blocking his way. The next time Unicorn doesn't attack because he thinks they are still illusions. The X-Men regain the case and Marvel Girl gets in the truck. The truck returns to Nefaria. Professor X uses his powers to walk into Nefaria's base. Marvel Girl gives the money to Nefaria. Professor X walks in and manipulates the controls as he saw when in his astral form. Nefaria flees with the money. The X-Men are worried Nefaria will get away, but Professor X also used the machine to make an illusion of the briefcase (how one holds an illusion I don't know). Professor X also called the coast guard to pick them up.

Uncanny X-Men #94- flashback- After escaping from jail, Count Nefaria calling in debts and using Maggia science designs a superior weapon- the Ani-Men.

Iron Man #8- flashback- After the death of what she thought was her father Whitney Frost is confronted by Count Nefaria. Nefaria has a tape of Byron Frost admitting that he worked for the Maggia. That part of his job was to raise Whitney as his own. Nefaria is her real father. Nefaria wants her to take over the Maggia in the Nefaria tradition. Whitney runs but Nefaria tells her that when her friends find out her true heritage they will abandon her. Whitney tells the man she loves, Roger Vane, the truth. He mumbles about and remembers somewhere he was supposed to be. When he doesn't return for months Whitney goes back to Count Nefaria. Under his tutelage Whitney trained. Nefaria pictured in jail. Whitney Frost takes over the Maggia.

Uncanny X-Men #94- In the Rockies at a military base codenamed Valhalla Base a man gets an unexpected piece of mail. Inside is a box with a button “Press Me” on it. Thinking it a joke he pushes the button. Suddenly a portal opens and the five Ani-Men walk through into the war room. They quickly defeat all in the room and those sent as back up. Count Nefaria walks through and compliments their efficiency. He says that they will remember that he is their master if they ever want to be human again. Nefaria presses a button and releases a gas within the rest of the base. Only Nefaria and his Ani-Men are left conscious. Nefaria says that this time they won’t ransom just a city, but the entire world. Nefaria sends out a broadcast that he has control of America’s entire nuclear reserve. He says that each country on Earth must pay him a ransom equal to their ability to pay or he will launch every missile. Nefaria says that they have three hours to decide and then signs off. Beast sends the transmission to the X-Men. He says that the Avengers can’t candle it right now so he sent it to them. As the X-Men fly to the rescue Nefaria is amused that it is them. Nefaria launches some missiles. Cyclops does his best to evade them, but the ship is hit. The X-Men escape into a “lifting body”. Nefaria is furious. He activates the sonic disruptors. The lifting body is gone, and the X-Men start to plummet to Earth.

Uncanny X-Men #95- Nefaria thinks to himself as he watches the X-Men fall that this isn’t the team he remembers, but decides ultimately that it doesn’t matter. Croaker asks Nefaria if he is bluffing about destroying the world. Nefaria says that he is, but that they can’t take the chance. The Ani-Men ask what they will do if the Avengers show up. Nefaria says that they will get rid of them as they did the X-Men. The mountain’s defenses will take care of them. The X-Men land unharmed. Nightcrawler teleports into the base, but is confronted by Croaker. Nefaria yells at the screen as Croaker is defeated by Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler lets the other X-Men in, but they then walk right into a room of gas. Colossus, Wolverine, and Thunderbird smash through the wall. Mind-controlled troops attack them. Colossus uses his body as a shield for the others. Storm washes the troops away. The other Ani-Men sneak attack the X-Men. They quickly knock out Thunderbird and Banshee. The others defeat the Ani-Men. They leave Thunderbird and Banshee behind, but find that the self-destruct action has already been activated. Nefaria runs to the hangers and boards a jet. Thunderbird and Banshee spot him. Thunderbird leaps onto the jet as it flies away. Professor X tells Cyclops that their battle with the Ani-Men disabled the self-destruct mechanism, but that there is an X-Men in mortal danger. They rush out, but Thunderbird smashes through the jet. The jet explodes killing Thunderbird, and supposedly Nefaria.

Avengers #164- Count Nefaria's driver has quit, and Nefaria is forced to drive himself to the docks. There he locates Erik Josten. Nefaria makes the mistake of calling Josten "Power Man". Erik is still pretty sensitive about his loss of the name to Luke Cage. He throws a crate at Nefaria. The crate passes through Nefaria because that Nefaria was an illusion. The real Nefaria offers Erik a job, and makes an offer to increase his power. Nefaria tells Erik that his first job will be to break two other villains out of jail. Power Man and his recently sprung allies Whirlwind and Living Laser robs the Union National Bank. They manage to get away from Captain America, Yellowjacket, Scarlet Witch, and Black Panther. Nefaria goes into his basement and talks with the scientists he has working on Project N again. Professor Sturdy was Zemo's first assistant on creating Wonder Man. Nefaria interrupts Whirlwind and Power Man's argument as they bring Nefaria the bank money.

Avengers #166- flashback- Nefaria tells his Lethal Legion that Sturdy will now expand their power. Nefaria begins to feel the power flowing through him. Nefaria tries to kill Sturdy so that he cannot make another like him.

Avengers #164- The "remade" trio attacks the Avengers. They do remarkably well until their powers fade. Panther realizes that they were sent here to be gotten rid of. The ground uproots and the team looks up to see the transformed Count Nefaria.

Avengers #165- Nefaria smacks Captain America and Black Panther. Beast leaps at Nefaria furious over his role in Thunderbird's death. Nefaria swats Beast down and insults mutants. Scarlet Witch tries using her hex to hurl a stone missile at Nefaria. Nefaria blasts the missile with eye blasts. He keeps the blasts on and when he overpowers Scarlet Witch she will feel the eye blasts. Yellowjacket stops him by blasting him in the face inches away from him. Nefaria grabs Yellowjacket out of the air. Wonder Man comes to fight. Wonder Man knocks Nefaria over, but Nefaria gets up ready this time. Wonder Man hits Nefaria again to no effect. Nefaria hits Wonder Man through the wall of Avengers mansion. Cap and Beast hurl Cap's shield together. Nefaria snatches it out of the air. He tries to crush it, but wonders about his power when he can't. Nefaria slings it and hits Panther. Nefaria picks up a forty-story building and crushes the Avengers with it. Nefaria walks to a bank. He recalls how at first he didn't want to wear his new costume, but had to in order to conduct the energy from Sturdy's machine. But now he enjoys the costume and feels it is "properly dramatic". Nefaria rips off the door to a bank vault. He plows through the wall. Nefaria sees an attractive woman with a guy. He pushes the guy down and leaps away with the woman. He tells the girl that he now possesses the power of Power Man, Whirlwind, and Living Laser a hundred fold. Whizzer runs around Nefaria. Nefaria knocks Whizzer over. Whizzer tells Nefaria that for all his power he is old and will die soon. Nefaria leaves him alive because he has given him a purpose…immortality. Sturdy emerges from the wreckage of Nefaria's house. Iron Man digs out the Avengers. Wonder Man was holding the building up, but was afraid to move it. Nefaria returns looking for Thor. Iron Man attacks, but is eye blasted back. Nefaria knocks off Beast and Panther. Scarlet Witch tries to knock a building onto Nefaria, but he uses his speed to hit her, Yellowjacket, and Captain America in the blink of an eye. Iron Man smashes Nefaria with a boulder. Iron Man boosts his strength with power and tries to take Nefaria down. His power fades and Nefaria knocks him away. Nefaria knocks Wonder Man into Captain America and Yellowjacket. Thor arrives.

Avengers #166-Thor throws his hammer at Nefaria. Nefaria is hurt. Thor flies down and punches Nefaria. Nefaria gains confidence because he has taken Thor's best. He tries an eyeblast, but Thor deflects it with his hammer. Thor tries to suck Nefaria into a warp, but Nefaria covers it by throwing a building on it. Thor is impressed. He summons the lightning to strike with him. Thor goes to strike Nefaria with his hammer. Nefaria stops Thor's hammer with his hand. Nefaria knocks Thor over. As Nefaria goes for Thor's hammer Vision confronts Nefaria. Vision tries to phase through Nefaria, but cannot because of the excessive energy within him. Nefaria strikes the intangible Vision. As Thor knocks away a bus Nefaria had thrown Professor Sturdy finds Nefaria. Sturdy reveals that Nefaria is aging at an extremely accelerated rate. He could have controlled it, but as he tells Nefaria he dies from the wounds Nefaria inflicted. Nefaria will be dead in two days. Thor offers help, but Nefaria strikes him and flees. Cap gives Wonder Man his shield and a smaller contingent goes after Nefaria. Vision knocks Nefaria out of the sky. Wonder Man hits him, and blocks his eyeblasts with Cap's shield. Iron Man blasts him, and Thor strikes him with his hammer. Scarlet Witch unleashes her hex on Nefaria, and Thor punches Nefaria. Nefaria staggers up, but is finally knocked out as a diamond hard Vision dive-bombs on him. Yellowjacket talked to Sturdy before he died. He learned how to return Nefaria to normal. Sturdy too had been lying about Nefaria dying. The super energy would have allowed Nefaria to live forever.

Iron Man #114- Count Nefaria seen inside a chamber receiving the first stage of his treatments to become normal again. Iron Man brings Unicorn into Avengers mansion for treatments. When they leave Unicorn is revitalized. Madame Masque, Stark's girlfriend, enters Tony Stark's penthouse apartment. He is receiving commands through his headset. He reactivates Arsenal.

Iron Man #116- flashback- The battle between Arsenal and the Avengers destroys Nefaria's chamber. Nefaria crawls away. Nefaria contacted the Ani-Men to find his daughter Madame Masque.

Iron Man #115- Tony goes home and is attacked by The Ani-Men; Monk, the Ape-Man, Frog-Man, Bird-Man, and Cat-Man. Tony actually manages to knockout Cat-Man, but he is then knocked out from behind by Whitney Frost, Madame Masque. Behind Whitney in a wheelchair is an aged Count Nefaria. Whitney says they can use Stark to force the Avengers to restore her father to his proper age.

Iron Man #116- Whitney tells Nefaria to have the Ani-Men stop beating on Tony. She reminds him of his promise that Stark would not be hurt. Nefaria apologizes for lying, but he says he has been through too much to allow Stark to remain a threat. Once Stark is dead Nefaria will have his daughter's undivided help. As the Ani-Men beat on Stark they allow him to get too close to his Iron Man suitcase. To save his life Stark reveals that he is really Iron Man. While Iron Man fights the Ani-Men Spymaster blows up the apartment. When Iron Man gets back a guard tells him Whitney and Nefaria went out the service entrance. Whitney uses the robotic Stark to get everyone out of the facility she needed for Nefaria. Iron Man is forced to defeat the robotic Stark. When he tries to take Nefaria back to Avengers mansion Whitney activates the Jupiter Landing Vehicle. She uses it to fight Iron Man. Iron Man disables the vehicle, but if forced to push the thing back to avoid letting it run over guards. Nefaria's tube is destroyed and he dies. Whitney leaves Tony.

Avengers #353- Count Nefaria is re-animated by the Grim Reaper to be part of his Legion of the Unliving. Count Nefaria and Starstalker attack Hercules. Hercules doesn't seem to be able to pull Nefaria off.

Avengers #354- Nefaria and Starstalker knockout Hercules. They prepare to feast. When Grim Reaper remembers that the Avengers didn't kill him, but that he leapt to his death the "Legion's" souls are freed. They gather to get revenge on Reaper for taking them out of the abyss and making them follow him. Lloigoroth, who gave Reaper his power, reclaims him.

Iron Man vol 3 #1- behind the scenes- Count Nefaria hires the Death Squad to kill Tony Stark.

Iron Man vol 3 #6- behind the scenes- Count Nefaria hires Hauptman to kill Tony Stark.

Iron Man vol 3 #8- behind the scenes- Count Nefaria hires Whiplash to kill Tony Stark.

Iron Man vol 3 #15-behind the scenes- Count Nefaria hires Nitro to kill Tony Stark

Iron Man vol. 3 #16- behind the scenes- Count Nefaria’s men block the path of Charles Gray’s Jeep with Nefaria’s limousine. They pull him around to Nefaria’s door. Nefaria apologizes for his very loyal men. Nefaria sucks Charles Gray’s ionic power from him.

Iron Man '99 annual- Count Nefaria saps the ionic energy off Count Nefarius as he is about to take his revenge against Moonstone. Nefaria takes the corpse and puts it in his grave to throw off the S.H.I.E.L.D investigation. They have found the other bodies he has left: Charles Gray and Rafe Michel (former host of Lucifer). Nefarius' soldiers watch Iron Man warn all other ionic beings that they are potential victims. Nefarius stands besides them an assesses that Iron Man has no clue what is going on. When Iron Man goes to visit the gravesite of another ionic being, Aries, Nefaria has Whiplash, The Death Squad, and Nitro attack him. With a little help from S.H.I.E.L.D., Iron Man gets them all on the run. He follows them to Sicily. Iron Man engages them in the courtyard of a castle. Vittorio Silvani renders all the hired help unconscious as he delivers an ionic shock to the entire area. It knocks all Iron Man's systems offline. Vittorio rubs it in too long, and Iron Man knocks him out. Nefaria walks out regretting having to employ his relatives. Nefaria mentions that Vittorio did the robberies to fund the proper machines to return him to his glory. Unfortunately Nefaria needs to constantly feed upon ionic energy to keep from returning to the aged husk he had become. Nefaria eyeblasts Iron Man. He picks Iron Man up and punches him out of the castle, off the mountain, off land into the water. Iron Man guesses he is a mile from the castle when he gets up. Nefaria ten picks up an entire ocean liner and drops it on Iron Man. Nefaria digs in to find Iron Man covered in oil. He ignites the oil with his eyebeams. Iron Man is blown clear. Nefaria walks out on fire. Iron Man asks if that is his best. Nefaria shows Iron Man his best. Nefaria lifts a gigantic boulder over his head. Iron Man blasts him causing him to drop the boulder on himself. Nefaria climbs out, but needs to go replenish his power. He is arrested by S.H.E.I.L.D. A week later Nefaria is freed by the Sicilian authorities and given immunity. Nefaria is back in his castle recharging himself with his new prisoner Therak. Therak provides Nefaria with a constant flow of ionic energy.

Captain America vol. 3 #29- flashback- Stox, Nefaria in disguise, arrives with an army and advanced technology. Stox subjugated everyone. Stox used the people of the Savage Land for experiments. Many died, but some evolved into the dinosaur men. Stox seems to be trying to create something specific. When Ka-zar, Shanna, and Matthew were injected they neither died nor evolved, but aged overnight. Ka-zar and family escaped when Sharon Carter brought one of the dinosaur men back.

Captain America #30- flashback- After arriving in the Savage Land Stox beats Kazar, and subjugates the inhabitants of the Savage Land. Stox then had a bunch of juvenile dinosaurs captured. Stox's assistant uses genetic experiments to alter the dinosaurs. Stox's assistant actually succeeded in his quest, but because the traits did not immediately surface the dinosaur was released. The dinosaur came back with Sharon Carter to free the others, but were also captured. Stox, really Nefaria, wants to create a race of beings that will supply him with an endless supply of ion power.

Captain America vol. 3 #28- Count Nefaria, disguised as Stox, wakes Sharon Carter in her cage to ask her if she told anyone she was going to the Savage Land. Dinosaur men surround him. Nick Fury tells Captain America that Sharon Carter is lost in the Savage Land. Cap goes to find her. Cap is attacked by dinosaur men. He is saved by Matthew Plunder, Ka-zar's son.

Captain America vol. 3 #29- Cap and Matthew have to fight more dinosaur men. Zabu arrives to help them. Cap and Matthew escape by flying away on winged dinosaurs. Cap sees an aged Ka-zar. Kazar tells Cap about Stox. Ka-zar dies. Stox, really Count Nefaria, thanks Sharon Carter for returning the test case. He holds the key to creating what Nefaria wants. Stox asks the doctor if he is ready. The doctor says yes, and Stox threatens him because of all his failure so far. For some reason they take Sharon Carter out of her cage. She tries to stop the next experiment so Stox blasts her down with his eyebeams. Cap, Matthew, and Zabu break into Stox's base. Stox shoots eyebeams at them. Cap says he knows Stox's secret identity. Nefaria takes off his mask and Savage Land garb.

Captain America vol. 3 #30- The key to Nefaria's quest lies strapped to a table while Captain America, Sharon Carter, and Matthew Plunder, Kazar's son, are all hung from the ceiling in cages. Captain America is being held in place by a snake-like dinosaur. Nefaria says that capturing ionic powered being was a hassle and that creating them just seemed easier. Nefaria asks when his assistant, Dr. Manning, when he will be ready. The ray begins. Without his arms free Cap kicks his shield into the projector. Cap breaks his cage with his feet and rolls, dinosaur included, into the path of the ionic ray. The dinosaur releases Captain America, and Nefaria decides it is time to go. As Nefaria runs he wonders why it's always the Avengers who foil him. Captain America hits the running Nefaria in the back of the head with his shield. Nefaria says that Cap is lucky his ionic powers are at their lowest point. As Nefaria uses a cybernetic link to summon his ship Captain America walks out onto a rope and wood bridge to punch Nefaria. Nefaria's ship shoots at Cap and destroys the bridge. Cap grabs hold of Nefaria's foot and climbs him. Cap pulls the device that cybernetically allows Nefaria to control the ship. Nefaria falls off the bridge, but is caught by Matthew Plunder to be held on trial.

Captain America vol. 3 #31- After investigating Captain America and Sharon Carter discover that the true inhabitants of the Savage Land, including Kazar, Shanna, and Matthew, are in suspended animation. Count Nefaria used clones for his experiments. After they are freed Captain America agrees to let Kazar keep Count Nefaria in the Savage Land to stand trial for his crimes against them. Nefaria is being kept in a thick, short cage. Nefaria scoffs that they will never be able to hold him.

Avengers vol. 2 #31- behind the scenes- Grim Reaper, on the behalf of Count Nefaria, attempts to unify the leaders of the Maggia. Reaper also attempts to bring Madame Masque to Nefaria, but Madame Masque sacrifices herself with an exploding facemask.

Avengers vol. 3 #33- flashback- Nefaria drains the ionic energy off Wonder Man enough to make Wonder Man his slave. Nefaria then sends out Wonder Man to capture Atlas for him.
