Hammer and Anvil

Somebody thought it
would be funny to bond
the two together on the
chain gang. Maybe because
Leroy was known as Hammer,
and Johnny's last name was Anvil.
Perhaps because John Anvil
was a racist, and Hammer Jackson,
with his antisocial attitude, hated everyone.
Whatever the reason the joke
didn't last long enough because
when the two were endowed
with an energy producing chain
they were an unstoppable force.

Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #182

Marvel Team-Up #86- John Anvil and Hammer Jackson are working as security guards at the D.R.C.(Deterrence Research Corporation) Tower, formerly the Magnum building for Moses Magnum, when a reporter who had broken into the building had video taped proof of the DRC's latest illegal scam. Anvil catches the guy, but Spider-Man who was aware of the building's illegal past, webs him to the wall. Anvil starts making excuses to Mr. Carlson when Carlson stops him. Carlson tells Anvil that the reason he had him and Hammer released from prison was because he needed good men. He presents them with a repaired energy synthicon. He tells the two that unlike last time they will no longer share a psychic link, merely a physical bond. They can take the chain off whenever they want. Spider-Man is swinging by not thinking. He pays attention to his spider-sense to late, and Hammer and Anvil hit Spider-Man together and knock him out. When Spider-Man awakes he finds himself manacled with electro-shackles that redirect his strength against him. Hammer and Anvil talk to a shadowed figure Mr. C. Just as Hammer and Anvil are about to unmask Spider-Man when the Guardians of the Galaxy burst in and free him. Anvil swings Hammer around using the chain and hitting people. Martinex freeezes the chain and Spider-Man pulls it apart changing them back into regular people.

Marvel Tales #256- A woman drives off the road to avoid hitting "the Freaks". The Freaks go down to save her, but find out she was running from Hammer and Anvil. They ask Dr. Melloncamp if she thought she could get away. The doctor asks why they're harassing her since she saved their life after Spider-Man severed their chain in Marvel Team-Up #86. Hammer and Anvil say they want to keep her around in case they need to be saved again. They wrap their chain around her neck. The freak with six arms decides they need to save her. Anvil throws Six away. Gorilla Girl appears as a nude woman before Hammer. While he is distracted Muck Monster hits Anvil with a tree. Gorilla Girl morphs back into her gorilla form and knocks out Hammer.

Spider-Woman #38- Hammer and Anvil are under orders to kidnap "old lady Sheridan" the head of Sheridan Industries, but when they trash her Rolls Royce with their chain Spider-Woman hits Anvil from behind. Hammer throws a hunk of debris at her. Anvil "cracks the whip" and knocks Spider-Woman off the wall. Anvil knocks her down with a punch. As Hammer and Anvil threaten Amanda Sheridan Spider-Woman blasts them with a full force Venom-blast, but only slows them down. Anvil grabs the woman and they escape. Anvil drops his electronic ID card that tells Samantha Sheridan that Anvil works for Deterrence Research Corporation. The DRC and the Sheridans had long been opponents. DRC causing the deaths of many of the Sheridans the Sheridans do whatever they can to be a thorn in DCR's side. DCR responded with a hostile takeover of Sheridan Industries. The meeting is tomorrow and without Amanda Sheridan there the takeover is much more likely. As Jessica Drew Spider-Woman uses a copy of Anvil's ID to get into DCR. Spider-Woman runs into Hammer and Anvil. Hammer "cracks the whip", but Spider-Woman dodges and helps Anvil's momentum. Both Hammer and Anvil fall through the wall. Spider-Woman gets Amanda Sheridan out of the building, but once outside Hammer and Anvil hurl a gigantic rock knocking her out of the sky. Spider-Woman keeps hitting Hammer and Anvil with Venom-blasts making them angry. Spider-Woman figures out that the chain is the source of their powers. She grabs ahold of the chain and is blasted by the energy, but she holds on. Spider-Woman sends out her own electric impulse which causes the chain to feedback leaving Hammer and Anvil vulnerable. She pulls the chain together and slams their heads together.
