Fafnir of Nasrond

Fafnir was the king of an ancient land that defied Odin. As punishment Odin rendered the land uninhabitable. Fafnir was no quitter though. He stayed in his kingdom, and found a radiant pool that he discovered was granting him immense power, and turning him into a dragon. Fafnir waited and waited for one of the sons of Asgard to come into his land so that he might gain his vengeance.

Thor #134- Thor and the Warrior’s Three tour Nasrond, where once an evil race lived that opposed Odin. Odin was so furious that he laid waste to the county so that nothing there could live. They set up camp, and though Volstagg is supposed to stand guard he falls asleep. An old man with a staff awakens Volstagg. The old man tells Volstagg of the Cave of the Ancients. He tells Volstagg the cave contains knowledge that only the greatest of warriors are fit to learn. Volstagg figures it will be fun to tell the others in the morning. The old man leads Volstagg to the cave that was the last refuge of the ruler of the land after Odin caused the land to become unlivable. Volstagg wonders how the old man can be there if no life can sustain there, but before the old man answers Volstagg sees a radiant pool where radiant energy feeds on itself. Volstagg tells the old man to stay back. The old man says that the last king of Nasrond feared the pool too, but he was to find that the pool was not deadly. He would find that continued exposure would grant the king great power…power to create an image of an old man. Volstagg realizes that he has been tricked. The voice tells Volstagg that the power would transform him into a being so powerful that he could survive in this deadly land. A giant green hand reaches down and picks up Volstagg. Fafnir says that he is that ancient king that Odin cursed long ago. Fafnir says that he has waited a long time for a son of Asgard to come his way. Fafnir says he is truly lucky since he now holds the perfect hostage to entrap the very son of Odin.

Thor #135- Fafnir listens as Thor, Fandral, and Hogun look for Volstagg right above him. Fafnir plunges his hand out of the ground and grabs Thor. Thor tells the others to get back, but Fandral refuses. Fandral finds that his sword cannot pierce Fafnir’s skin. Thor hits Fafnir’s hand with his hammer causing Fafnir to release him. Thor asks where Volstagg is. Fafnir says they will never find him, and just because he got free of his grip doesn’t mean they isn’t doomed. Fafnir breathes fire at Thor. Thor throws his hammer into Fafnir’s face, and lifts him off the ground, but doesn’t knock him out. Odin watches the fight on his view screen. He says Fafnir must be defeated so that Nasrond can live again.

Thor #341- Lorelei walks in a subway station on Midgard that Loki sent her to. She seeks to ensnare Thor for herself. Suddenly Fafnir growls and asks who disturbs his slumber. Lorelei tells him to look into her eyes and for him to tell her. Fafnir says that he sees a very bold beauty, but that he can smell the stench of Asgardian on her and that Asgardians are his enemy. Lorelei says that Asgardians are his masters, and that he will help her make Thor hers. Fafnir asks what she knows of Thor. Lorelei tries to entrance Fafnir, but it is Fafnir that entrances her and Lorelei tells Fafnir everything she knows. Later Lorelei is tied to a high crane at the construction job where Thor’s new secret identity is trying to get work. When he sees Thor Fafnir emerges out of the ocean. Fafnir swats the constructed skeleton of the building Thor stands on with his tail shattering it. Fafnir starts shifting through the rubble for Thor’s body so that he can burn it to cinders to be sure he is dead before going after Odin. Thor hurls his hammer at Fafnir, and says that Odin fears no dragon. Fafnir says that Odin’s power is nothing to him, but that he thanks Odin for destroying his people and forcing him into exile so that he is transformed into his dragon self. Fafnir says that he will thank Odin by killing his son. Thor says that he trapped Fafnir before in the Earth. Fafnir says that he was stuck there sleeping and growing until the ground shook and woke him up. Fafnir breathes fire. He misses Thor, but sets the location on fire. Thor starts a storm to put it out, but Fafnir figures that Thor wants to try and defeat him the same was he did last time. Fafnir doesn’t want to be trapped again and decides to leave until he can pick a location more to his liking. He smashes the ground and disappears into the Manhattan subway systems.

Thor #342- Fafnir sits in a cavern cursing himself for not taking advantage of Thor in the last issue. He says that Thor was in the palm of his claw, and that there was nothing to be afraid of and that Thor was helpless before him. Fafnir says that Thor’s power is nothing compared to his. Fafnir emerges from the water in the South Bronx. Fafnir announces that he is going to destroy the city until Thor is brought before him.

Thor #343- Fafnir continues to destroy the city and says that he will keep doing it until Thor faces him. Fafnir’s destruction starts to move towards Manhattan. Nobody can find Thor, and the National Guard has been brought out to fight Fafnir. Fafnir says that he has waited long enough and now he is really going to destroy the city. Thor finally arrives with Eilif the Lost, an elderly Viking from the Antarctic that now looks to gain entrance into Valhalla. Eilif was given strength through Thor’s hammer, and as he left the Antarctic Odin, disguised as a wandering traveler blessed his spear. Thor hurls his hammer, and knocks Fafnir off his feet. Fafnir swings his tail, but it is blocked by Thor’s shield-bearer Eilif. Fafnir breathes fire at both of them, but they dodge it. Later Fafnir finally gets a hold of Thor, but Thor strikes Fafnir’s hand with Mjolnir. Thor then strikes a blow on Fafnir that has an impact so great that it is felt in Pennsylvania, but Fafnir is unaffected. Thor realizes that Fafnir’s hide is impenetrable. Thor tries to warn Eilif, but Fafnir blasts him with his fire breath. Fafnir then swats him off his flying horse with his tail. Eilif falls to the ground. Thor is stunned at his comrade’s fall. Fafnir swats Thor with his tail and drives him through the buildings across the way. Eilif realizes he was too brash and vows not to let Thor die because of his mistake. He takes his spear and thrusts it into Fafnir’s back. Fafnir swats Eilif saying that Thor can wait, and that only the death of the one who hurt him matters. Thor leaps onto Fafnir’s back and drives the spear into him with his hammer. Fafnir dies. Thor throws Fafnir’s body at Elif’s dead feet to act as Eilif’s dog when Thor lights his funeral pyre.

Thor #487- Kurse orders his servants to attack. Fafnir and the giant Fafnir start knocking over buildings together. Thor is forced to deal with the flying dead first leaving Sif to battle the Fafnirs. Fafnir says that he doesn’t care if Kurse thinks they are battling Thor or Malekith. He only cares about the prizes of killing his master’s enemies. Fafnir breathes fire at Sif. He misses but the force blows Sif from her feet. Sif is in trouble when the High Evolutionary shows up with the Godpack. The Godpack help, but Fafnir and the others are still too much for them. Fafnir again breathes fire at Sif, but he misses again knocking her back.

Thor #488- As part of Kurse’s Dead Legion, Fafnir is about to step on Sif as Thor flies in. He lifts Fafnir’s foot, and throws him into a nearby building. As the fight goes on Beta Ray Bill throws his hammer into Fafnir’s face. His second shot sends Fafnir falling into a building. As the building collapses it buries Jane Foster-Kincaid and Sif, but they get away. Suddenly Hela arrives and Fafnir says that Kurse swore she was dead. Hela says that Malekith fooled Kurse. Kurse says that Hela is an imposter, and orders Fafnir and the others to attack her. Hela raises her hands and turns Fafnir and the other dead into statues. Hela frees Kurse’s mind from Malekith’s enchantment, and he takes off after Malekith. Hela tells Fafnir and the others to go find Malekith for her. Thor tells Hela that it is unfit for her hordes to roam Midgard. Hela says she will return to Hel with them if Thor agrees to be her slave forever. Thor agrees and Fafnir and all the others return to Hela’s realm.
