Green Goblin

The Green Goblin, Norman Orborn, has long been considered Spider-Man's most dangerous foe. He was the first for to ever learn Spider-Man's identity. He was the first for who found a way to surpass Spider-Man's spider-sense. He was a loose cannon that might go off at anytime, and did when the Green Goblin killed Peter Parker's then girlfriend Gwen Stacy. The Green Goblin died...or so it was believed. Since that time Green Goblin has commited far greater evils upon Peter Parker. Osborn has killed Peter Parker's unborn baby, kidnapped and caused him to believe that his Aunt May had died. Norman was also responsible for the most henious act in all of comics- he had a clone of Peter Parker created, and made him believe that for many years his life had been lead by a clone when it was really him all along. Many still shudder from this abomination.

He says that Peter won’t be getting up until he is ready for him to. Peter says that it can’t be Harry. Norman says that Peter saw to it that his son died, and that he has returned to make him pay for all his transgression against his family. Norman steps into the light. Spider-Man tries to wrap his hands around Norman’s neck, but Norman shoves him down. He then rips his shirt open to reveal a giant scar on his chest from where the glider impacted. Norman says that Parker is pathetic, and that he can’t believe that he spent so long planning for this. Norman recounts for Peter how he came back to life, and allowed Harry to be the Green Goblin while he left America. Norman says that Peter forced him to return by killing his son, and that he wants his life. Peter tries to tell Norman that he is just a clone, but Norman interrupts him and reveals how he was behind the entire clone debacle. Norman picks up an unconscious Ben Reilly and says that he has always been a clone. Norman throws him to the ground and says that a victory over him is nothing to him. Norman says that he is tired of pulling strings and that he is taking a more active role. He says that what he did earlier was to even the score for Harry. Goblin then smashes through the window where across the street is the Daily Bugle. Norman says that all his friends and the people in his life are there, and he will kill them before him to make him suffer. Ben Reilly wakes up and tells Peter that the Daily Bugle is loaded with high explosive pumpkin bombs. Goblin smashes through the window of the Daily Bugle and grabs Jonah. Jonah recognizes Norman’s voice. Goblin blasts Spider-Man as he leaps at him. Norman looks down at Jonah and tells him to stop looking so afraid he isn’t going to kill him. Norman drops Jonah and then flies over to smack Liz Osborn for her role in keeping Harry weak. Peter webs Goblin’s back and pulls him outside. Goblin blasts Spider-Man to the ground and tells Harry to look at what an Osborn can do. Spider-Man gets back up and Norman shouts the question of what he has to do to finish Spider-Man. Ben Reilly smashes through the door of the Bugle to let everyone out. He then runs around gathering up the pumpkin bombs. Flash Thompson comes back in to help. Ben leaps to knock Flash down as a grenade explodes. Ben takes the brunt of the damage. He bandages up his ribs, and leaves with the pumpkin bombs. Peter tells Osborn that he will never give up just to spite Norman. He kicks Norman off his glider and removes both of their masks. Peter punches Norman and says that he will never give him the satisfaction of defeating him. Ben Reilly arrives with the bombs. Peter takes them to get them away, but Norman activates his glider. The glider smashes into Ben Reilly’s back and knocks him off the top of the building to his death. Spidey throws the bombs at Goblin. As they explode Norman says that this won’t kill him and that he will be back. Spidey takes Ben Reilly’s body away, and it dissolves. He realizes that Norman was telling the truth when he said that Ben was the clone.

Norman says that the death of his son (which Spider-Man was present for), his daughter-in-law being swamped with the company, the slanderous book by Ben Urich linking him to the Green Goblin, and the re-emergence of the Green Goblin have all lead to him wanting to restore honor to the Osborn name. Osborn puts his cigarette out in his palm. He says that he won’t let Roderick endanger all his work. Spider-Man distracts Molten Man, and Robertson and Mongrain leave to go find Peter Parker. Maxwell makes sure that Osborn realizes that the five “gifts” are power, knowledge, immortality, death, and madness. Osborn says that he is not a fool. Maxwell asks Martha or “Matt” at her young age if she understands. Matt says that she would risk everything to get out from under her father’s control. Norman says, “Well said.” He says that he had his doubts about her, but is sure she will make a fine addition to the Gathering. Molten Man finally catches up with Alison Mongrain and Robbie Robertson outside Peter Parker’s house. Robbie finds that Alison is wearing a tracer. The pieces start to glow and the Gathering begins. Osborn places his piece in the center first. Madame Web gets to receive the first gift. She places her piece and falls over dead. Norman says that should be a relief to the others. Matt goes next. She can’t define her gift. She just feels lightheaded. Overpower goes next. He feels powerful. Elsewhere Spider-Man arrives at the house Peter knows May to be at. He dodges his way through moving trees and killer mutant animals. Spider-Man can see Osborn’s manor when the Green Goblin shows. Norman says that Peter has disappointed him. He says that he left clues for him, but that Peter could never figure it out. Spider-Man says that nothing will stop him from getting his daughter back. Norman laughs. He asks if that is what Alison told him. Green Goblin tosses Spider-Man a book and says that he was supposed to find this too but didn’t. Spider-Man sees that the words are changing into a story about how Peter Parker poisoned his aunt when she learned his secret identity as Spider-Man. Spider-Man throws the book at Goblin, but Goblin blasts it out of the air. Goblin says that he is tired of their vendetta. He says that it might be his new godhood, or the DNA bomb that he plans on reshaping the world with, but he says that it is time for Spider-Man to die. As Goblin blasts at Spider-Man, Spidey says that he is still going to get his baby. Norman says that he never took the baby…that it died. Spider-Man reaches Goblin. Norman falls down. He says that the world is about to be reshaped with a great amount of pain, and that killing Spider-Man should be viewed as a gift to an old friend of the Osborn family. Spider-Man breaks the glider and runs to the house. Goblin tackles him from behind crashing him into the house. As they punch it out Peter says that Norman isn’t taking anything else from him. Norman says that he has already taken everything. Peter knocks Goblin down and webs him up. Spidey rushes down the hall and opens the door. A lamp hits him on the head. He looks up and sees his supposedly dead Aunt May. Goblin laughs.

Spectacular Spider-Man #263- The Final Chapter part 3- The Goblin flies into the room. He says that the old woman is his. Spider-Man says that he can have her. Goblin smacks her unconscious. He debates just giving him the woman, but decides against it. Goblin asks Spider-Man if he cannot see what he has become. Goblin says that as long as they are both going to die when the DNA bomb goes off he can be re-united with his aunt until then. Goblin tells him to get out before he changes his mind. Spider-Man finds out from Reed Richards that she is the real May Parker. He also shows Spider-Man a device in her neck that will kill her if it is not removed. Spider-Man goes to Norman Osborn to find out what it is. He crashes through his window. Norman says that after all these years Peter still dances to whatever tune he plays. Peter asks what this has to do with his aunt. Norman says that she is just another mortal for him to use. He says that he has been given the power of a god, but Peter just tells him that he is insane. Goblin says that if Peter wants answers all he has to do is look out the window. Norman says that Spider-Man has already witnessed the effects of the DNA bomb twice. Once was on his rival in #97, and the other was the trees and animals at his estate. Norman pushes a button on his belt, and the people inside the room Peter is looking start to melt. Goblin says that they aren’t dead they are merely their DNA. Norman says he will reshape them when he wants. Norman says that Spider-Man will be dead before then. (What happens from here is a little shaky). Spider-Man hits Goblin, but Goblin doesn’t even feel it. He grabs Spider-Man by the throat. Goblin throws him out the window, but catches him on the glider. Goblin says that he wants their feud to end much more publicly. As he flies by he tells Spider-Man that he has been using his philanthropic charity work to distribute thousands of DNA bombs. He then tells him that the thing inside Aunt May’s skull will cause all the bombs to detonate when it is taken out and exposed to oxygen. They arrive at the Daily Bugle. Goblin tells Spider-Man that he took Aunt May after her stroke and that an actress studied to be his aunt. He told her his secret identity to make him think that she knew. He says that when Peter mourned over a stranger he laughed. Goblin says that it is time to reveal to the Bugle Spider-Man’s identity. He takes off Spidey’s mask. After everyone sees Goblin throws a bomb at Peter and kills him. Goblin holds the dead Spider-Man in his arms.

Amazing Spider-Man annual '00- flashback-

Revenge of the Green Goblin #1- Norman Osborn sits in a wheelchair and watches the tapes of how Spider-Man really defeated him instead of the way his insane mind saw it. Donald Menken says that Norman has been watching the tapes for weeks, and he tells him that it won’t change the past. Norman says that he still has a little trouble differentiating reality from his reality. He says that he is to blame for his madness because he is the one that assembled the Gathering of the Five. Norman says that he is responsible for being in a wheelchair with an intravenous drip helping him to maintain his sanity. As Menken promises that they will find a better method the nurse walks in. Menken yells at the nurse for not knocking, but Norman says that it is all right. Kolina Frederickson introduces herself when Norman asks. She says that it is time to change his IV. Doctor Bendix walks in and says that he will handle it from here. Dr. Bendix shows Norman the scans of his brain and how the medicine cocktail has helped return his mind to nearly normal. Norman says that he needs something that allows him to be not as vulnerable. The doctor says that they will deal with things one at a time. Norman grabs the doctor by the throat and tells him not to patronize him. He says to destroy Spider-Man he must regain complete control. As time goes on Norman watches surveillance tapes of Spider-Man that Menken gives to him. Dr. Bendix designs a patch for Norman to wear. Norman starts to exercise again. Norman reads the paper saying the famous model Mary Jane Watson was killed in an airplane crash. Norman figures that his revenge is assured now. Later still Kolina is massaging Norman’s shoulders as Norman reads the paper about how Venom attacked the Bugle. Norman tells Kolina that she has done a wonderful job, and that she has given his life a rare balance. Norman says that he is going to be relocating soon, and that he wants her to come with him. She accepts. Later at Osborn manor Norman invites Kolina to join him for dinner at nine. Menken says that he thought the point of getting a European nurse was to keep their whereabouts unknown. Norman says that he knows what he is going and to mind his business. Kolina appears at dinner. Norman is in a suit and is holding a rose. They start to dance. Kolina wonders if this is ethical. Norman says to think of it as physical therapy. Norman tells Kolina that his father thought him that darkness can be your friend if you just embrace it. Norman and Kolina kiss. The next day, as Peter Parker returns home he walks through a green mist. He enters his building to find his mailman delivering his mail. He gives Peter a free sample of toothpaste. The gas had deadened his spider-sense, and the mailman was Norman Osborn in disguise.

Revenge of the Green Goblin #2- Norman stands in the Green Goblin costume before the former Scriers. He says that those who left following the charlatan who was posing as a Scrier can call themselves Scriers. He welcomes them all to the Order of the Goblin. All the followers are wearing the top half of the Goblin mask. Norman promises rewards to the loyal. He says all they have to do is kill the Spider. Norman throws out Dr. Bendix dressed in a Spider-Man suit. Bendix pleads for his life saying that he restored Norman’s sanity. As the order kills Bendix the Green Goblin says that he did restore Norman’s sanity, but that the Green Goblin has no further use for him. Goblin tells them to remove the body, and that they are free to go about their lives until the next summoning. Norman and Menken walk through the tunnels back to Norman’s lair. Norman says that he has been thinking about his mortality, and the fact that he has no heir. Harry is dead and Normie is too young. Menken says that Norman can count on him. In Peter Parker’s apartment, Peter is having a nightmare. The Goblin leaps through his mirror as he brushes his teeth. Peter pulls off the Goblin’s mask to find Spider-Man beneath. Goblin pulls Peter’s face off to reveal a Goblin mask. Norman thinks to himself that Peter must have used the toothpaste a few times by now and his dreams should be starting. Kolina finds Norman sitting in the dark. She changes his patch. She opens the shade and lets the moonlight in. She says that they should take a vacation together. When Norman says that they can’t yet Kolina asks if Norman is ashamed of her. Norman says never. He says that he has enemies and that he wants to be sure she is protected first. He says that in a few weeks his business will be done and they can go. The next day Peter notices that his spider-sense is having problems. He picks up a compact disc of an old recording of his Uncle Ben singing. The CD contains subliminal messages and as Peter listens to it in his sleep he gets out of bed and swings over to a club Norman had arranged. Spidey drops into the club filled with pumpkin bombs. Kolina is looking for Norman. She finds a hidden entrance and goes down to find the Green Goblin. She screams. Norman instinctively throws a pumpkin bomb at her. When he sees what he has done he rips his mask off and rushes to her. Tears roll from his eyes as he holds her.

Revenge of the Green Goblin #3- Peter is having another dream (though we find out later that as he dreams it, it is also happening). The Green Goblin holds Spider-Man over his head. He says that Spider-Man has been a source of agony to him for years. He says that he will now die where he should have years ago. The Goblin throws Spider-Man into the water at the scene of Gwen Stacey’s murder. The Goblin returns to the club. He takes off his mask to see Spider-Man’s mask. Under the Spider-Man mask is Peter, under Peter’s face is the Goblin. Peter wakes up. He sees that Randy used his toothpaste, and then hears Randy having the same nightmare as Peter had about the mirror. As Peter ponders this, Norman watches him through the camera he has on Randy’s computer. Norman turns the screen off and walks upstairs to check on Kolina. As she lies there Norman thinks of standing by Emily’s casket. Kolina awakens from the gas. Norman tries to tell her that it was a nightmare, but Kolina remembers. Norman admits that he is the Green Goblin. The next day Peter goes to the Brooklyn Bridge as they fish out the body of Spider-Man from the water. They unmask him to reveal Dr. Bendix dead. Peter is still trying to make the connection. Menken brings Norman his medication. There are Scriers/Goblins in the house. Norman takes the cart they are pushing. Norman tells Menken that Kolina found out that he was the Green Goblin. Menken starts to freak, but Norman says that he will take care of it his way. Kolina refuses her favorite meal from Norman. Menken sees how whipped Norman is. He tells Kolina that he has worked for Norman for years and asks her to give him a chance to explain. Menken gains favor in Norman’s eyes (Menken wants to be named as Osborn’s heir). Norman tells Kolina about how he came to gain his super powers. Kolina says that all Norman’s mental problems stemmed from the original explosion. Norman corrects her that the explosion is what allowed him to start building the Osborn Empire into something larger than it ever was before. He tells her that he fought Spider-Man and discovered his greatest secrets. He says that once he was even killed, but he came back. Kolina says that Norman just needs a new patch. Norman shouts, “How dare you doubt me?” He says that she was his nurse didn’t she ever notice his scars before. Norman rips off his shirt to reveal the place where he was impaled. Menken whispers that she can’t be allowed to live knowing what she knows. Norman advances on her, but as he looks at her he still sees Emily. Norman stops he says that he could never hurt her. Menken whips out a gun to do it for him. Norman grabs Menken by the neck and starts to choke him for hurting his love. Menken chokes out that he is Norman’s heir. Kolina puts a patch on Norman’s back, and says that if he loves her not to kill him. Norman stops. Norman’s acolytes come. He tells them to take Menken and Kolina to his Adirondack estate. He tells them to guard Kolina with their lives. Norman thinks to himself that Menken was a fool to believe he would be his heir. His heir needs to be strong. He also thinks how courageous Kolina is to stand up to him. He thinks to himself that he will win back her love. Norman watches as Peter Parker moves in a trance to the hideout he arranged for Peter. He thinks how Parker is under his control and got rid of Bendix’s body for him. Norman watches as Peter picks up the Goblin mask. Norman laughs as his chosen heir is under his control as he puts the Goblin mask on.

Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2 #25- Norman stands before the house built by his great-grandfather remembering the time that his father left him there overnight in the dark to break his fear of the dark. As Norman walks into the unlit house he recalls that this was the place where he learned to embrace the darkness. He says he entered a sniveling brat and emerged seeing things differently. He thinks that his father was right. He says that he should have thanked him when he had the chance. As Norman enters the house he picks up a spider and closes the door. Unknown to Peter he emerges as the Green Goblin and attacks his roommate Randy and Gloria out on a date. He chases them, but doesn’t hurt them. Later, Peter wakes in the apartment to hear Randy calling the police saying the Green Goblin was chasing them. Peter slips out to check on it as Spider-Man. Spidey chalks it up to Goblin attacking him through his friends. He realizes that everyone has known that the Goblin is back but him. The Daily Bugle has Goblin on the cover. He realizes that Goblin might attack there. He goes there to find he is too late (he had to be because he was the Goblin who attacked the Bugle). He asked what happened and Robbie says that Goblin was looking for him. Goblin said that he was going to destroy everything Spider-Man ever touched. Later Norman is elated when Spider-Man goes to check on little Normie. Normie is sitting waiting for his father to come home. He figures if his grandfather can keep coming back then his dad will too. Spider-Man asks if he sees his grandfather. Normie says he does. Spidey waits for Harry with Normie until Normie falls asleep. Peter goes to sleep at Aunt May’s. He “wakes up” to find that the Goblin has struck again. He sees that it is the Stacy house. The house is on fire. Spider-Man saves the tied up with a pumpkin bomb Paul Stacy. The police are still trying to arrest him as he leaves. Spidey wonders why he bothers. Norman is still watching him. Norman says that he is ready. Pete goes home and as he is brushing his teeth he realizes that it is something in the toothpaste. Pete passes out. When he wakes up Norman is holding him up outside the Osborn house. He says that there is nothing to be afraid of. He says that he was younger when he did it, but they’ll have to work harder to make up for Peter’s age. Peter says that he is insane. Norman says that he might be, but they’re there to address Peter now. Osborn says that Peter is going to embrace the darkness. He says that the darkness saved him twice. Once when he was little and once when he was impaled on the glider. Avoiding the light saved him. Peter blacks out. As Goblin Peter goes and gets Normie from his house. Peter wakes up in the house. He says that he is not playing anymore. Norman says that he can go find the light, but the dark is comforting. He says that it is the light of day that brings pain. Spider-Man hears Normie. Spider-Man asks what he is doing to Normie. Norman says that he is just giving him a father. Spider-Man asks why he is doing all this to Normie and his friends. Norman says that he isn’t doing anything. That Peter is doing it. Spider-Man finds the recorder playing Normie’s voice. Spider-Man sees the light. Norman warns him and says that the darkness is where the Osborns get their strength. Spider-Man says that he isn’t an Osborn, but is shocked by the light. Norman says that Peter is a lot more “Osborn” than he thinks. Peter wakes up in the rain. Peter asks what the point is. Norman tells him again that it was Peter that is terrorizing his friends. He takes the Spider-Man mask off to reveal a Goblin mask. Osborn picks him up and drags him back to the house. He says, “Come now. Enter the Darkness. Be a man. Be an Osborn.”

Peter Parker: Spider-Man vol. 2 #25- Peter has a hallucination of his own funeral. He yells to be let out, but Norman says that this is the only way. He tells Peter not to fight the drug. It’s a hallucinogenic and a bit of the Osborn formula. Peter says that it hurts, and Norman says that he knows. He tells him that he must come into the darkness, and how his father cured him of his fear of the dark. Norman tells Peter to embrace the darkness or it will devour him. Peter hallucinates that Norman is Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben tells Peter to come into the darkness. Peter suddenly sees the Goblin and hits him. Norman knocks him to the ground. He says that he supposes he should be pleased that Peter isn’t an easy mark. He says that he will understand in time. Later with each lightning bolt Peter feels a shock. Norman tells him to choose again. Before Peter is a glass of water in light, and a darker drink in darkness. Norman says that he hasn’t had anything to drink in two days. He says that the darkness drink will quench more than his thirst. Peter knocks the glass over. Norman starts to yell, but realizes that Peter is just trying to bait him. Later Peter is receiving shock after shock to reinforce that light will hurt you. Peter shouts for Norman. Norman is staring out the window with a tear in his eye. Peter lies on the ground motionless. Norman tells him about the time when Normie was born. He was coming to get the boy and saw Spider-Man there watching him. He realized then that Spider-Man should be his heir. Norman says that he never wanted that drug-addled moron Harry. He says that Harry could never run Osborn Industries. Norman says that Peter has to make the choice to join him himself though. Later Norman opens the door to the room Peter is in. Peter recoils from the light. Goblin turns them off for him. Goblin helps Peter up. He gives him a green vial and says that he is glad he finally made the right choice. Norman says that Peter’s father and baby are both gone, and that if he drinks the vial he will have gained both father and son. Peter throws it in Goblin’s face. He says that he doesn’t want to be part of Norman’s world and neither does Normie. Goblin hits him. Goblin asks how he could have been so wrong about him. He says that he should have known that he didn’t have what it takes. Peter fights back and says that Norman will only get Normie over his dead body. Norman says, “As you wish…” Goblin hits Peter and then attempts to take off on a glider. Spider-Man jumps on too, and they both fall onto the roof of the house. Goblin says that he should have killed him when he had the chance before, and he had a lot of chances, but he thought that Peter might be worth something. Goblin lays into Spider-Man with five unanswered blows. Goblin says he knew he could always defeat him whenever he wanted. Parker jumps on Goblin and pounds him down. Parker says that Norman never could defeat him. Norman says that he already did. He says that he broke his spirit. Norman says that Parker looked into the darkness and blinked. He says that he’ll never be able tomaintain his altruistic façade. Norman says that he showed his true self when he reached out for the darkness. Goblin kicks Spider-Man off and then jumps onto his glider. He says that they are very similar beings…Norman has just always been able to admit what he was. Goblin says that very soon one of them is going to kill the other, and on that day Parker will have to choose. Goblin flies away laughing.
