Graviton

Graviton, Frank Hall at birth, was an scientist working on a teleportation beam, but when he took a chance and doubled the power to his experiment that energy merged with an experimental anti-gravity element that had been under atomic bombardment. Since then the world has been an odd fit for a man who controls the most basic of Earth's powers- gravity.

Avengers #158- flashback- Frank Hall is trying to create a teleport beam, but the matrices won't align. Frank doubles the energy, which actually caused it to work, but the energy had merged with an experimental anti-gravity element under atomic bombardment. The energy did not teleport him, but instead rearranged his cells. Frank reported the accident, but not the side effect that he discovered- that he could control gravity. Frank drops a wrench on a colleague's head that had criticized him. As stories about Frank spread he decided to make the entire city of the research center his property.

Avengers #158- Frank Hall sits behind his desk condemning his former colleague, Joe, for calling for outside help despite his command that the research center remain cut off from the rest of the world. He says it doesn't matter because the help will never arrive. Frank elevates the entire area around the research center into the sky. Joe says the Avengers aren't coming. Frank then blasts Joe to the ground. When Judy runs to his side Frank tells her to shut up and get back to her place, or he will kill Joe and end her favored status as well. Frank has Joe taken away to be locked up. Later Frank has Judy bring him his new suit. He puts it on and says that from now on he will be called Graviton. He says that it is a fitting name for a king. He tells Judy that she stands to benefit as well if she forgets that idiot Joe. Judy plays along, but only because she sees Vision phasing through the wall. Raquel rushes in and warns Graviton. Graviton blasts all the Avengers, including the intangible Vision, out of his quarters. Vision changed to super dense form to avoid being blown out, but Graviton makes the Vision super light and rams his head into the ceiling. Captain America goes to throw his shield, but Graviton causes it to get incredibly heavy and traps Cap beneath it. Wonder Man can't get it off him. Raquel knocks out Judy for betraying Graviton. Iron Man and Scarlet Witch blast him, but he blocks it with the concrete of the floor. He uses the concrete to blast them like a cannonball. He causes a pencil to weigh a ton, and then swings it around to knock out Wasp and Yellowjacket. Beast and Wonder Man are the only ones left, and Graviton buries them in rubble from the ceiling. Graviton stands victorious over the Avengers.

Avengers #159- Graviton lifts the Avengers into the sky out of the rubble. When he finds out Raquel hurt Judy he smacks her. He says Raquel only sees him as a way to money and power, but Raquel says that isn't true. The Avengers freed Graviton's prisoners and led by Joe they attack. They shoot at him, but Graviton protects himself with intensified gravity. He lessens all their gravity and they go flying off the floating island. Judy offers herself to Graviton if she spares Joe. Graviton sends Raquel and all the others down to Earth. Graviton starts moving his island from Colorado until it is over New York. The Air Force tries to attack the island, but it is protected by the same force field. Graviton demands that world control be turned over to him or he will go around and destroy every major city. Graviton stands admiring his slab of concrete that he has all eight Avengers pressed against. Judy had to beg so that their lives would be spared. Graviton says that they will soon surrender to his demands, but turns to face Thor. Thor shattered the force field around the sky island with his hammer. Thor flies at Graviton, but is pushed backwards by his field. Thor strikes Graviton with lightning, but again to no avail. Graviton launches a building at Thor, but Thor smashes it apart. Thor blasts Graviton, but Graviton redirects the blast back at Thor. Iron Man uses his repulsors full blast to get free of the slab. Black Panther starts using a field disruptor on the slab as Iron Man goes off to fight. Iron Man strikes the ground near Graviton throwing him off guard, and actually damages Graviton's field, but he quickly recovers and blasts Iron Man down. The other Avengers, now freed, run at Graviton. He places them all in a field and laughs at how easy he dominates them. Graviton sees Judy's crown and jewelry on the ground. He realizes that she jumped off the island. He blames the Avengers because he could have saved her if he hadn't been fighting them. Graviton prepares to unleash all his power, but suddenly it turns into a black hole. The island collapses in on him. The ball the island becomes falls to earth. The Avengers catch it and throw it into river. Judy was saved by Jarvis.

Marvel Two-In-One annual #4- Judy is leaving the DMV with Jarvis as a man in a trench coat and hat walk up to them. He says he has been looking for her, and tells her to come with him. Jarvis can't lift his legs as the man drags Judy off. Black Bolt, also in trench coat and hat is holding Alicia, reaches for Graviton. Thing recognizes Alicia and hits Black Bolt thinking him in league with the other trench coated Graviton. Graviton gets away. Later in the alleyway Graviton takes his trench coat off, and Judy shouts his name. Graviton now knows that Judy does know who he is. He has been unable to remember his name or past, but recognized Judy's face. He starts to remember, but it blanks again. Judy doesn't want to tell him who he was. She runs and screams. Thing arrives and punches Graviton, but his latest condition also brings with it an intangibility. Thing's fist passes right through him. Graviton increases Thing's mass, but can't hit Black Bolt as he flies around. Judy tells Thing about Graviton's past. Graviton overhears and starts to remember. Black Bolt's power zaps Graviton. Graviton realizes what has happened to him. His gravitational pull is so great that he has become a living black hole. Graviton's body alters to a giant red flaming grid. Space bends around Graviton causing him to be only visible by the distortion he creates. Graviton's mind clears. He asks for sanctuary within Attilan, but considering he will relapse Black Bolt refuses. Graviton pulls a piece of the surface of sun to collide with Attilan in the Himalayans. Graviton then releases tiny fragments of himself. The tiny black holes will rip apart whatever they touch, but Black Bolt's electrons attract and gather them together. Graviton takes off smashing and destroying as he goes. Black Bolt flies into space and creates a counter explosion that nullifies the sun's surface. Thing throws concrete at Graviton, but Graviton doesn't even notice as he walks away. Black Bolt theorizes that a large part of anti-matter would send Graviton into the dimension he has created. Graviton makes it to the UN Plaza. When Black Bolt sees that Graviton waits for the anti-matter to hit him he stops the flying rock. Graviton wants the transfer to happen. He warns all that seek to control others' fates. Graviton does to himself what the anti-matter would have done. He vanishes.

Thor #324- At the United Nations a hole opens up in the sky whipping everything around. Suddenly Graviton reappears naked in the sky. He says that after what seems like an eternity of trying he has returned to earth. Later Graviton floats up the side of a building. He stops at the 18^th floor, and blows the wall in. Graviton floats into the apartment of Joe and Judy Parks. Graviton says he is still in love with Judy. Judy says she is married to Joe, and pregnant with his child. Judy says he could attract hundreds of women with his power. Judy says anyone she could love would be gentle and caring. Graviton says he could be, but he knows he is destined for greater things. He floats out of the apartment saying caring for her was a mistake. He tells to remember for the rest of her days that he could have made her a queen. Graviton goes to a bar, and starts complaning about women. He asks where to go to get the beautiful looking women. The bartender says he should go to where they buy those expensive clothes. The next day Graviton goes to Bloomingdales. He pulls the entire eight-floor store out of the ground. Graviton flies inside the store to the intercom. He announces that he is looking for a consort, and that whoever he chooses can have Bloomingdales as a wedding present. Thor happens by. He finds out from a shopper what is happening. Graviton has the four hottest girls left when Thor arrives and hurls his hammer at Graviton. Graviton stops the hammer, but tells Thor to be more careful since if he were knocked out the store would fall killing all within. Graviton blasts Thor through the wall without his hammer. The hammer returns, but not before Thor becomes Don Blake. Don falls to the ground, but hits his hammer right before impact. Thor turns back to Blake, and makes a quick trip. It is Thor who returns to Bloomingdales. Thor throws his hammer around Graviton. Graviton knows it will come up behind him so he turns. Thor sneaks Graviton, and gives a shot of sodium pentathol. Thor says he will be unconscious in two minutes so he better lower the store back. Thor takes the unconscious Graviton and moves him to another dimension using his hammer.

West Coast Avengers #3- flashback- As the Beyonder's construct passes through the dimension that Graviton is in it awakens his consciousness.

West Coast Avengers #2- The Blank is a regular guy who stumbled upon the invention of a guy who he just watched get killed by a car. The machine turns him into a "blank". He becomes all gray with no features, and extremely slippery. The guy powers up his belt, but as he walks away he fails to notice the glowing form come from the machine and say, "no…come back…need…more…power." After The Blank returns from almost getting captured by the West Coast Avengers he goes to charge his belt. Suddenly a man springs forth from the charging machine. The guy says he thought he was one of the Avengers. The guy gives Graviton some soup. Graviton asks about the Avengers. The guy says he was about to flee LA to escape them. Graviton says that if the guy helps him he will never need to worry about the Avengers again. Graviton levitates his cup of soup above his hand.

West Coast Avengers #3- Graviton surveys his new estate. He thinks about how he got out of the dimension Thor tricked him into. The Blank returns to Graviton's side saying that his messages have been delivered. Graviton asks Blank what he is so nervous about. Blank says that he just isn't used to messing with the Avengers. Graviton says that he has fought them before. Blank brings up that he lost. Graviton smashes Blank to the ground saying it was only because of his inexperience with his powers. Graviton says Thor had to trick him last time. Graviton says he would send him into space like he will to Blank. He even turns Blank's force field off. Blank admits Graviton has the power, but he is just used to getting things the sneaky way. Graviton puts Blank down, and turns his field back on. Graviton says that by the time the Avengers even learn that he is back on Earth they won't be able raise their voices against him. Later the Shroud (a good guy who poses as a mob boss) comes with a disguised Wonder Man to find out why Graviton's "message" was breaking up his place. Shroud tells Simon to pound Blank. Simon leaps at Blank, but he is stopped in mid-air, spun around, and tossed down. The true boss stands revealed as Graviton. Wonder Man tries to run at Graviton, but Graviton makes him heavier and heavier until he falls through the floor. The Shroud tries to surround Graviton, but Graviton spins the gravity in the room dispersing him. Blank calls for help. Graviton thinks that Blank is becoming an embarrassment. He presses Shroud against a wall. Wonder Man manages to get back up, but Graviton lifts him with anti-gravity. Blank asks if he can be let down since they're partners. Graviton says he was nothing more than a figurehead for his organization. Graviton says there is no place in his organization for whiners. He blasts Tigra, Shroud, and Blank into the Pacific Ocean. Graviton blasts Wonder Man into the pool and holds him underwater with gravity.

West Coast Avenger #4- Graviton gets up from drinking champagne to receive Madame Masque. She says that she is interested both in his ideas of consolidating the countries crime families, and in men of power. She mentions that the Avengers have started up a new branch on this coast. Graviton laughs and shows her Wonder Man who he has trapped on the bottom of his pool for hours. Suddenly Iron Man arrives and knocks Masque's goon behind the bushes. Graviton smacks around Iron Man's flight path. Graviton starts to feel woozy as Mockingbird posing as his bartender heavily drugged his alcohol. Wonder Man crushes the bottom of the pool and gets free. Iron Man punches Graviton's force field, but still barely dents it. Iron Man grabs Masque and flies away. Graviton flies after them. Graviton spots Madame Masque, but doesn't see Iron Man who has hooked himself up to a power plant. Graviton uproots the ground, but Iron Man keeps blasting. Graviton and Iron Man are both knocked to the ground. Madame Masque hits Graviton, and then reveals that she is really Tigra is disguise. Graviton erects another force field. Wonder Man, Iron Man, and Tigra knock it down, but Graviton blasts them back. Hawkeye shoots a tranquilizing gas arrow at Graviton. Graviton tries to get away, but collapses. Graviton is loaded onto a truck by US Marshals.

West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #13- flashback- After easily escaping the US Marshals Graviton is seen in his lab thinking about the principles of the Unified Field Theory, that four forces account for everything in nature. So just as he controlled gravity he wanted allies that could control electromagnetism, the strong force, and the weak force. Graviton sent out a message in all light about what he was looking for.

West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #9- behind the scenes- By bending light Graviton watches Tigra make the deal with the Cat People to kill Master Pandemonium.

West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #12- Tigra is leaping from tree to tree thinking when she suddenly comes up short on a jump and falls to the ground. Later as the West Coast Avengers are battling Quantum and Half-Life when they are suddenly pressed to the ground. Graviton flies in on a rock. He has with him Tigra on a leash.

West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #13- Graviton gloats with Quantum and Half-Life as he holds Wonder Man, Iron Man, and Tigra (on a leash) to the ground with his gravity powers on a rock that floats ten miles above the surface of the Earth. Hawkeye and Mockingbird are trapped in a gravity cage. Graviton says he was thinking about killing them all, but after seeing Tigra he decided against it. All his boasting ruffles the feathers of his allies. He tells them about the Unified Field Theory. He explains that Quantum controls the strong force while Half-Life controls the weak force. Zzzax seems to have been a token as nobody else responded to his call. He sent them out to keep the other West Coast Avengers busy while he concentrated on Tigra. Everyone gets outraged, but when Graviton kisses Tigra her feline side swoons. Graviton goes inside to talk with his allies about their goals. Inside Graviton intercepts Mockingbird's distress signal with her hidden radio, and sends the radio waves out into space. Later Graviton frees Tigra from her leash. Tigra tries to leap out the window, but gravity fields prevent escaping. Graviton says that the strongest part of her wants him. He offers to kill Master Pandemonium for her. He says that she is already his, and she may as well go along with it. Tigra leaps at Graviton, but he just drops her to the ground. He tells her to think about total satisfaction as his queen as he leaves. Later Graviton comes upon Half-Life and Quantum fighting. Tigra set them at each other's throats to break out the Avengers. Graviton tries to separate them, but only succeeds in getting locked in some odd power struggle. Quantum shoots off one way and Half-Life the other. Graviton loses control, and the island starts to rocket into space. Wonder Man tries to carry Graviton off the island, but Graviton refuses. Everyone else gets away, but Graviton remains on the island.

Fantastic Four #322- flashback- Graviton regains enough control to get the density and temperature under control. Graviton put everything into a state of suspended animation until regained all his control. Graviton then pulls the atmosphere off a passing world to replenish his air supply.

Fantastic Four #322- Graviton hurtles his sky island back towards Earth for revenge. He notices a gravitational anomaly in New York and decides to investigate. Graviton figures out that another demonic dimension is trying to merge with his. He figures he could probably stop it, but wonders how he could make it benefit himself. The pineapple Thing and thing-like Ms. Marvel are patrolling the streets and spot Graviton. They jump him from behind. Graviton makes them both light enough to float into the air. He then makes himself denser and hits the Thing. Ms. Marvel attacks Graviton, but he levitates her, and then rams the two of them together. He rockets them through a building. He then forces them onto the ground, and defies them to get up. Suddenly Torch blasts Graviton. While his power prevents him from catching on fire Graviton does feel pain from Torch's blast. Graviton sucks the air away from Torch snuffing his flame. Graviton smashes Torch between Thing and Ms. Marvel, and then has a skyscraper crush them all. Graviton petitions the crowd to offer him worship if he will expel the demon dimension. Torch burns through the building. Graviton tries the same trick, but Torch boosts his power level drawing air to him like a high-pressure weather area. Torch magically decides that since he is flame that gravity doesn't affect him at all. Torch sends flames in the shape of his body at Graviton. Torch pulls the heat from Graviton's body, and then immediately surrounds him with flame. Thing works his way out of the building, and scores the first ever knock out of Graviton…well this is probably the most inaccurate use of Graviton to date.

Amazing Spider-Man #326- Graviton levitates towards New York City. He thinks about how Kingpin contacted him about defeating Spider-Man in exchange for his sending someone else to defeat the Avengers he scoffs. He supposes that Kingpin has some reason for sending a tiger to squash a kitten. A police helicopter tells Graviton to put his hands up, and lower himself to the ground. With a simple gesture Graviton crushes the helicopter. He thinks about how to find Spider-Man when he spots the Daily Bugle. Graviton strolls into the lobby of the Daily Bugle. The guard pulls a gun, but Graviton increases its weight to cause him to drop it. Graviton then presses the guard against the ceiling until he passes out. Graviton then raises the Bugle off its foundation and into the air. Graviton allows the reporters and cameraman to follow him, as he wants a record of his actions kept. Spider-Man enters the Bugle through a window. Graviton's blast misses. Spider-Man throws a filing cabinet at Graviton, but Graviton deflects it. A flash from the camera breaks Graviton's concentration. Spider-Man hits him knocking him down. He goes to crush Graviton with another filing cabinet, but a reporter brings up the point that Graviton is holding up the building and that if it drops hundreds will die. Graviton rips the floor up, and wraps Spider-Man in it. Spider-Man breaks free, but then Graviton forms the scrap into ball, but Spidey dodges it. Graviton then increases the photographer's weight to a few tons. Spidey tries to lift him, but as he gets him over his head Graviton crushes Spidey with metal desks. Graviton buries Spidey under a ton of rubble. Graviton puts the building down and leaves.

Amazing Spider-Man #329- Graviton is peeved that Spider-Man survived the beating he gave him. Even though the Acts of Vengeance is over Graviton decides to finish his job. Graviton thinks about lifting the Bugle again, but decides not to repeat himself. Graviton creates a thick fog to hide in. Spider-Man's powers have been acting up so when he swings by Graviton his spider-sense goes off like a fire alarm. Graviton increases Spider-Man's weight, and Spidey starts to fall to the ground. Spider-Man lashes out and an energy blast springs from his hand. Graviton is knocked through a water tower, and onto a car below. Graviton decides that maybe he won't tackle Spider-Man right now. Spider-Man discovers he has the power of Captain Universe.

Web of Spider-Man #64- Titania, the Grimm Brothers, and the Trapster are all being shipped off to jail. Suddenly their truck rises into the air, and the door rips open. They see Graviton, and he shreds their shackles. They float out and the truck falls to Earth. Graviton asks them if they want to join up with him to defeat Spider-Man, or if he should just drop them there. They all agree that they want revenge on Spider-Man. Graviton pulls them to New York to meet a man with a proposal. Later they board an abandoned oil tanker that is sailing past the Statue of Liberty. Inside the meet the Chameleon. Chameleon says that he will pay each of them $100,000 to kill Spider-Man. Chameleon then shows them their other partner in the bottom of the tanker: Goliath. Goliath is stuck at sixty feet tall. Peter Parker is home with his wife when he sees on the news that the Daily Bugle is flying again. The others start the attack. Graviton increases Spider-Man’s mass and drops him into wet cement. Graviton says that Spider-Man mocked him during Acts of Vengeance by not only defeating him, but by restoring the Daily Bugle after he had razed it. Graviton increases Spider-Man’s mass by ten. When Spider-Man resists Graviton decides to times in by a thousand. Goliath jumps in and steps on Spider-Man driving him through the street. Spider-Man sneaks out a manhole cover, and trips Goliath knocking Graviton and the others away. Spider-Man tries to run, but Graviton decreases his mass to zero. Spider-Man disappears into the sky.

Web of Spider-Man #65- Spider-Man manages to get down as he luckily snags a plane as it flies by him. Graviton and the others tear apart the oil tanker when they find that Chameleon has double-crossed them. They find a memo from the Kingpin to Chameleon that says that they planned together to con the five of them. They take off after Kingpin. Chameleon sees that his plan to set up Kingpin has worked perfectly. Goliath holds the others up to Kingpin’s window, but Graviton flies outside and increases the mass of the building. Graviton suggests Kingpin pay them what “his partner” owes them. Spider-Man webs Graviton’s eyes. Spider-Man hits Graviton, and for some reason **cough**bad writing**cough** Graviton is sent flying. A bus knocks out Titania…somehow. Spider-Man trips Goliath unconscious…so take it for what it’s worth…not much.

Avengers Unplugged #2- flashback- In his lab Graviton seeks to combine the three categories of force, gravitational, electromagnetic, and nuclear, into his body to create a sort of supergravity. A gravitational storm whipped up around him.

Avengers Unplugged #2- In Scottsdale, Arizona, Graviton's powers are out of control. As a military jet flies over it crashes. The pilot ejects only to find that his parachute does him no good. Graviton shouts the question of "What's happening to me?" Graviton's powers seem to be sucking more and more things around him. The Avengers arrive in a quinjet, but get sucked into Graviton's pull. Hercules sees innocents also caught. He figures Graviton has to go down. Hercules punches Graviton, but then turns incredibly heavy. Herc drops straight to, an into, the ground. Vision phases right into Graviton. A surge from Graviton disperses the intangible Vision. Deathcry shoots a grappling hook at Graviton. Giant-Man grows in size hoping it will allow him to withstand Graviton's field. Giant-Man hits Graviton a few times hoping to intimidate him into dropping his power. Graviton tells Pym that he can no longer control his powers. He tells him of how he sought to combine all three categories of force within himself. Graviton fears that he is beyond hope. Pym uses some Pym Particles to try and reduce Graviton's hold on the gravitational field. Pym is blown back by a force. Graviton says he only tricked Pym into giving him another mass particle that he had no access to- the Pym Particle. Graviton's mass is halved, but his power is doubled. Pym says that Graviton is now a living White Dwarf. Vision decides to strike while he is unfamiliar with his body. Vision starts to make himself more and more dense as he closes around Graviton. Pym throws more Pym Particles onto Vision. Graviton becomes a black hole, and swallows himself.

Thunderbolts #17- flashback- Graviton awakens on a micro-dimension. The beings were so astonished by his arrival that they considered him to be a god. Though they were completely loyal the Ptah, as he called them, were not very intelligent. Finding ruling over a bunch of cocker spaniels unfulfilling Graviton set about experimenting with dimensional teleporting. Graviton couldn't do it, but did configure a beacon for any whom might be able to help him home.

Thunderbolts #15- behind the scenes- Graviton is spotted by Baron Zemo who is using a dimensional scanner.

Thunderbolts #16- behind the scenes- Zemo isolates the frequency using the scanner. Zemo has Techno create a robot of the Hulk to send up against the Thunderbolts. As the Thunderbolts fight the robot it gathers all forms of energy in order to bring its subject into our dimension.
