"...I am not more sure that
my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the
primitive impulses of the human heart...Who has not, a hundred
times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no
other reason than because he knows he should not?"
-Edgar Allen Poe, The Black Cat
The Oxford Book of Villains has this to say in it's introduction: "...so far as writers of fiction are concerned, the serpent's presence was an unmixed blessing, as was the gift of free will and the power of the individual to choose the path of unrighteousness. If villainy hadn't existed it would have been necessary for the creators of the world's literature to invent it. In most stories villains provide the plot and make virtue interesting." or as Peter David wrote in The Last Avengers Story, "That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic."
This site is devoted to the guy who comes across one of those editor's notes about a villain's previous appearance and wanted to know more. The following villains are some of my favorites. You'll notice some of the more popular villains are missing. I prefer the road less travelled. The summaries that follow contain only information about that character. The descriptions are not meant to take the place of going and buying the issue. Believe me the artists' versions of the story is far better described by that artist. Go buy the thing.
(note this site is under construction, the chronologies will be there but not always the summary)
Check the news and updates page for any changes to the listings or for upcoming appearances.

ALONE
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were- I have not seen
As others saw- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring-
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone-
And all I lov'd-I lov'd alone-
Then-in my childhood-in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still-
From the torrent, or the fountain-
From the red cliff of the mountain-
From the sun that round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold-
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by-
From the thunder, and the storm-
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view-
-Edgar Allen Poe
