Fantastic Four #276- Reed, Sue, and Franklin Richards have assumed secret identities and are trying to maintain a normal life in a house. Their new neighbor suspects them of being witches and she contacts Elspeth Cromwell. Franklin wakes out of bed as Elspeth fights with Reed and Sue. He is tossed about when a large explosion occurs outside the kitchen. Franklin is injured and a slow trickle of blood leaks from his head. On the ground the blood starts to sizzle. Reed tries to make Elspeth see that the demons she is using are not really in her control and that they are in great danger. Elspeth tries to prove she is still in control, but the demon swats her aside. Franklin runs out of the house and Elspeth sees that he is bleeding. She realizes that she has spilt the blood of an innocent. Mephisto rises out of the burning ashes of Reed and Sue’s house.

Secret Wars II #7- Mephisto sits in his realm, with death standing by his side, watching the Beyonder. Mephisto says to Death that for him to protect her the Beyonder must die. Mephisto sits festering that compared to the Beyonder even he and Death are just subjects. Mephisto’s demons torture the souls trapped in his realm a little harsher and Mephisto is comforted by their suffering. Mephisto says that he was so relieved when Beyonder reconsidered and restored Death. Mephisto was afraid that his souls would be cut off. Mephisto says that to guarantee Death’s safety though he has to kill the Beyonder. Mephisto shows Death his Beyondersbane machine that he powered with the energy Beyonder used to destroy Death the first time. Mephisto says that when Beyonder reclaimed his power from Dr. Doom that he seemed weakened at first. Mephisto asks Death for advice. Death says that the death of a god is sweet. Mephisto asks if Death means the Beyonder’s death or his. Mephisto sends out Mr. Bitterhorn to cut deals with the Juggernaut, Electro, Baron Mordo, Absorbing Man, Titania, and on and on until he has contacted every super-villain in the world. Mephisto watches as each villain shakes hands with Bitterhorn and is imprinted with an invisible insignia that links them to the Beyondersbane machine. Beyonder says that if he fights any of his attackers it will complete a circuit with the machine that will create a feedback capable of killing the Beyonder. Mephisto says that the explosion will also destroy about a third of the universe including all his lackeys, but they don’t need to know that. Mephisto shows Death that all the great powers of the universe are so afraid of the Beyonder that they are assisting him in killing the Beyonder and a third of the universe. Mephisto reveals that Eternity himself is operating the Beyondersbane for him. Mephisto watches Beyonder, as the time to attack is about to arrive. Beyonder is going to move, and so Mephisto decides to create a diversion. Mephisto goes himself to recruit the Thing. Thing is tricked by Mephisto into agreeing and Mephisto grants him an immense power boost. Mephisto sends out his legions of lackeys, but when they get there the Thing (who was separately contacted by Mephisto to kill Beyonder) has second thoughts as starts to protect the Beyonder. Mephisto’s power boost to the Thing allows his to hold his own against all the villains. Mephisto realizes that his power is helping him. Mephisto tears up the contract-returning Thing to his regular power just as the Juggernaut arrives. Juggernaut pounds Thing, but Thing reaches from behind and trips Juggernaut. Suddenly all the villains start glowing as Mephisto’s Beyondersbane machine melts down. The villains all disappear. Death leaves Mephisto there in defeat.

West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #9- flashback- Martin Preston, famous actor, was out drinking and driving when he wrecked his car off a cliff. Martin was fine until he noticed that his arm had been torn off. He screams and Mephisto shows up. Martin offers his soul if Mephisto will give him back his arm and his life. Mephisto says that he is sure Martin’s soul is valuable to him, but that he already has plenty of souls. Mephisto rips the arm off a demon and uses to create a new arm for Martin. Mephisto then wonders why he should stop with one appendage.

Silver Surfer annual #2- On a planet named Birj, the Silver Surfer comes upon a woman named Mishina. Mishina is planning to sell her soul so she can provide for her family. Surfer gives her the speech about how he sacrificed himself for his homeworld. After Surfer leaves Mephisto comes out. Mishina says that she is having second thoughts. Mephisto says that the silver man is a god and that he just doesn’t want anyone else to have the power too. Mishina runs away and Mephisto says that she has doomed her family to a life of poverty and hunger.

Thor #429- The Wrecker is fighting Ghost Rider as he and the other Wrecking Crew try to free the captured Bulldozer. Wrecker is still new at using the Asgardian powers that he had been granted so when he blasts Ghost Rider he accidentally opens up a dimensional portal. Mephisto appears in the portal and asks who dares summon him.

Thor #450- Mephisto walks in his realm. He says that while he is the master of lies he has never lied to himself. Mephisto tells Thor’s soul that while he knows he will never gain the ultimate victory over one like Thor he has enjoyed Thor’s recent stay with him. Mephisto says that there are events in Asgard that may help extend Thor’s stay with him. Mephisto laughs. Eric Masterson/Thor, Code Blue, and Fandral fight to liberate Asgard from what they understand to be a traitorous Heimdall. Later “Odin” awakes from his Odinsleep and punishes Heimdall as a betrayer. Later Odin and Karnilla toast their conquering of Asgard. The two of them laugh as the true Thor’s soul remains in Mephisto’s realm.

Thunderstrike #15- flashback- Mephisto shows Thunderstrike Kevin's soul and the two strike a bargain.
Thunderstrike #15- Thunderstrike’s son has fallen ill. Doctors cannot dtect any medical reason. When Eric Masterson changes into Thunderstrike, Mephisto appears and says that only he can cure his son. Mephisto had tricked Kevin Masterson out of his soul. Mephisto and Thunderstrike make a deal. Thunderstrike heads to Asgard to steal a golden apple for Mephisto, but when he gets there he just can’t do it knowing that it would cost an Asgardian his or her immortality. Mephisto is watching and says that if Thunderstrike had done it that his soul would have become his, but as he didn’t Mephisto moves forward with his true plan. Thunderstrike returns to the hospital roof and Mephisto appears. Thunderstrike is about to offer to take his son’s place, but Thor shows up. Mephisto reveals that he called Thor to the hospital. He offers Thor the soul of Kevin Masterson for Thor’s immortal soul. He said he tried to get Thunderstrike’s soul for the trade as well. Thor is about to agree, but Thunderstrike stops him as Hela arrives. Thunderstrike called Hela once he figured out Mephisto’s true plan. Hela gets in Mephisto’s face about muscling in on what his clearly her territory. She says that if Mephisto goes through with it that it will mean war between their two realms. As they argue, Odin appears in the hospital and cures Kevin. Mephisto’s contract burns up in his hand. He says that he know longer has the upper hand. Mephisto tells Thunderstrike that they will meet again and then disappears.

Black Panther vol. 3 #2- flashback- Mephisto sits in a room with Everett K. Ross inside Leslie N. Hill housing project. Ross turns to Mephisto and says that “they” stole his pants. Ross adds that the skulls on Mephisto’s chair are a nice touch, and asks Mephisto if he bowls in his spare time. Mephisto notes that Ross said they took his pants. Mephisto gives Ross a new pair of pants while he waits for his master to return. Ross starts to thank Mephisto when he realizes that he just sold his soul for a pair of pants. Later Ross asks Mephisto if he had ever been of the Jerry Springer show. Black Panther is out investigating the Tomorrow Fund scandal. He gets the woman who took the rap to admit that Achebe was the man who set her up.

Black Panther vol. 3 #4- flashback- Ross stands in pair after pair of pants. Ross says that he is sure Panther will be there any minute. Ross asks Mephisto if he wants him to order a pizza. Mephisto asks Ross why he fears him so much. Ross says that it might have something to do with him being the Devil. Mephisto says that he only looks like the Devil. Mephisto says that he is the master of a realm that consists only of himself and those that willingly follow him. Ross asks why Mephisto doesn’t just leave the realm. Mephisto says that he and his realm are one, and that the longer he remains out of his realm the weaker he gets. Ross asks why he goes after souls then. Mephisto explains that it is an obsession with him. Mephisto says that the purer and more noble the soul is the better. Ross says that he works in Washington, and Mephisto adds that is why he need not fear him. Mephisto calls Ross “Kenny”, and Ross thinks back to a time when his mother and the children that used to mock him called him Kenny. Suddenly Panther returns and Ross asks Panther if he wants him to call the Avengers. Panther asks why and runs up and punches Mephisto. Mephisto falls to the ground. Panther’s tech men realized that Mephisto drew his power from his realm and found a way to cut him off from it. Panther jumps onto Mephisto’s chest and tears his heart out. Panther tells Mephisto that he has one chance to tell him about Achebe or they will be keeping his heart, and his power will be forever diminished. Mephisto says that Panther already has the answers. Panther guesses that Achebe sold his soul to Mephisto, and in turn Mephisto gave him Wakanda. Mephisto says that Panther is half-right: Achebe is his servant, but that Panther is the one that gave him Wakanda. Mephisto says that all Panther has to do is wish it and Wakanda can be free. Panther says that in moments Mephisto will be “dead” and Wakanda will be free. Mephisto says that a lot can happen in moments. They teleport to Hell.
Black Panther vol. 3 #5- flashback- Outside the gates of Hell Mephisto stands appearing as Achebe. He starts to shoot at them. Mephisto/Achebe says that they are real bullets, and that they can die there. Black Panther says that Mephisto can’t force anyone to enter his realm, and that the longer a part of him is separated from his realm the weaker he gets. Sadly Zuri mistakenly thinks that the heart in the pickle jar is a leftover and he eats it. Mephisto/Achebe enters his realm and tells Black Panther that if he really wants to free his people he will have to follow. Inside T’Challa is forced to relive the murder of his father. As young T’Challa stands over the dead body of his father his father opens his eyes. T’Challa realizes that he is really Mephisto. Mephisto says that he is offering T’Challa a serious bargain: six million souls for one. T’Challa say that he can have his soul. Mephisto puts his hands around T’Challa’s neck. Mephisto and Black Panther transform into their regular selves. Panther is laying out his terms and Mephisto fails to notice that he is being transported elsewhere. Mephisto asks what treachery is this. Panther says that Mephisto wants his soul, and that his spirit has been forever joined to the Panther God. T’Challa says that his soul is linked with that of all his ancestors. T’Challa says to take one of them they have to take them all. Mephisto feeds on a few of the souls and says that he is satiated. T’Challa says that Mephisto is satiated, but that “they” are not. Mephisto looks around to see endless Panthers. Mephisto says that he can’t handle that many souls and that he will be destroyed. Mephisto adds that they will al be destroyed with him. Mephisto wants to be released from his deal. Panther says that Mephisto knows his conditions. Suddenly they are all back on Earth and Everett K. Ross has no pants. Mephisto takes his chewed on heart and puts it back in his chest.
