Protocide

Protocide was Clinton McIntyre. He wasn't really a role model in the behavior department. In fact he was participating in PROJECT: PROTOTYPE because he figured it was preferable to being shot for killing his commanding officer. McIntyre took the serum without Erskine's knowledge and died because the formula was incomplete. Decades later McIntyre would be revived by A.I.M. (Advanced Ideas Mechanics). Protocide was led to believe that Captain America killed him to usurp his position in the hearts of America.

Captain America annual 2000- flashback- The day before Steve Rogers arrives at Operation: Rebirth General Maxfield Saunders argues with Professor Abraham Erskine about using a sickly man for the project. He thinks it should be a strong man. Erskine says that the personality of Steve Rogers is the results of months of research. General Phillips says that Erskine’s methods are his own. After Phillips and Erskine leave Saunders sends for his candidate Clinton McIntyre. One of his underlings says that McIntyre doesn’t fit the personality profile. Saunders says that he is the perfect physical specimen and that he will be far more powerful than Erskine’s puny candidate will. Saunders asks McIntyre if he is ready. McIntyre says that he will do anything to avoid the firing squad for killing him commanding officer. McIntyre says that the man was ordering them into certain death, but the fact that his rifle accidentally went off was a coincidence. McIntyre drinks down the potion. McIntyre clutches his head in pain. He says that Saunders didn’t tell him that the serum would be ripping his guts apart. McIntyre says that he will get Saunders for this. McIntyre hits Saunders and then starts throwing the MP’s around. McIntyre charges out into the street and starts pounding on cars. Saunders rushes out and says that McIntyre is going to expose everything. McIntyre kicks a truck over. Saunders is going to shoot McIntyre, but McIntyre gets a shield to block the shots. McIntyre starts to advance on Saunders, but suddenly grabs his chest and collapses. General Phillips rushes out and says that after the formula there are two more chemicals that must be administered. Phillips says that Saunders will hang for McIntyre’s death.

Captain America vol. 3 #26- Three young SHIELD officers draw the unenviable task of cataloguing a warehouse full of forgotten information because they tried to arrest Captain America. They find an unnumbered crate. Billups brings over a crowbar. All three are stunned by what they find. Billups quickly kills the other two agents. He says that it is a shame that he had to blow his cover, but that his bosses will consider it worth it just to see the contents of the crate.

Captain America vol. 3 #27- Sure enough Billups’ superiors in A.I.M. are upset that his cover is blown, and says that this crate had better be worth it. Billups says that this crate has been stored so long that the government has forgotten about it. They open the crate and they are amazed. Billups says that the playing field has changed in their favor, and that they will soon rule America and the world.

Captain America vol. 3 #28- In an underground installation outside Washington DC Billups says that they have run all the tests and that the results are conclusive. His superiors ask if there is any doubt. Billups says that there is not and to see for themselves. They are still amazed and say that they should have suspected that there were others before Captain America. Protocide floats inside a tube of solution. The AIM superior says that he wants an analysis, as the creator of the super soldier serum died with the secret of his creation. Every attempt to recreate the serum has resulted in failure. Billups says that this prototype that was given an incomplete serum that took his life, but that it is a life that they can restore.

Captain America vol. 3 #29- Protocide lies on an operating table as the A.I.M. technicians work him over. One of the men tells Billups that every test that they have run indicates that a serum enhanced him. He says that the same way Captain America was revived from an iceberg there is something in his blood that allows them to bring him back. They zap him full of energy. Protocide screams back to life and snaps his restraints. He gets up but has the look of a zombie about him. One of the A.I.M. guys names him Protocide.

Captain America vol. 3 #30- Later Protocide regains coherent thought. The A.I.M. guys greet him and ask him if he understands their words. He says that he does. They ask if he remembers anything or even his name. He responds that he was prototype. They correct him that he is Protocide and then show him a picture of Captain America. They tell him that he is the greatest enemy that he will ever know.

Captain America vol. 3 #31- Three giant A.I.M. battle droids stand before Protocide. A.I.M. scientists watch Protocide’s incredible speed as the test begins. Seconds later the test is over and the droids are mangled. A.I.M. says that Protocide'’ next target will be a living one.

Captain America vol. 3 #33- A.I.M. monitors with scanners, readings, and cameras as Protocide runs through the city. Protocide is running at 30 miles per hour, and then exceeds it. Protocide leaps off the rooftop of the building that he is running on top of. He lands on the top of a parked garbage truck. Protocide bounces off the truck like a trampoline. The A.I.M. superior tells them to send Protocide after his living target so that they can learn what type of weapon they have. Later USAgent has beaten down a group of A.I.M. agents that were trying to smuggle high tech weapons. Suddenly Protocide comes crashing in and smashes into USAgent. USAgent says that this should be good exercise. Prototype pounds on Agent. USAgent says that he has to slow him down and catch his breath. Protocide says that he will not. Protocide smashes down his triangle shaped shield through USAgent’s shield and into USAgent. Agent asks who Protocide is. Protocide says, “Your executioner.”

Captain America vol. 3 #34- Thor’s alter ego Jake Olsen is reviving USAgent when SHIELD arrives. Later Captain America defeats Cache, an artificial sentient life that A.I.M. created, and stops AIM from controlling a computer company. The AIM guys say that they have analyzed Protocide’s victory over USAgent, and that he defeated him without breaking a sweat. They say that Protocide is ready for his next mission. Protocide asks who the pigeon is. They say that it is the man that took everything from him- Captain America. Protocide says, “Captain Dead Man you mean.”

Captain America vol. 3 #35- AIM reminds Protocide that it was Captain America who sabotaged his super soldier serum and usurped his role as America’s champion. Protocide says that it was so long ago that he cannot remember it all, but that he remembers enough to suppose that AIM is telling him the truth. AIM tells him that they want to spread freedom, but fascists like SHIELD oppose them. Protocide asks them what they want from him. AIM says that they want to wrest control from SHIELD, but that Captain America must die first. Protocide says that after what Cap did to him killing him will be a pleasure. Elsewhere USAgent is on life support from Protocide’s beating. Later Captain America is escorting the Omega compound out of New York when Protocide attacks. Protocide hits Captain America. Cap tells SHIELD to keep going with the compound, and that the attacker is his. Protocide says that he is Cap’s- that he is like a cancer Cap has. Protocide hits Cap again. Cap says that his punches hurt, and that he is free to fight back without holding back. Cap hits him and says that Protocide is strong and fast, but not invincible. Protocide says that he is close enough. The AIM guy in Protocide’s ear tells him to make sure that he gets the compound first. Protocide smacks Cap and breaks into the truck with the compound. Cap tackles Protocide from behind. Protocide beats down Cap, but the AIM guy tells him to get the compound again. Protocide says that he can’t refuse the men who brought him back from the dead. Protocide grabs the compound. As Sharon Carter flies by in a SHIELD craft Cap quickly grabs the compound and leaps onto the ship as it passes.

Captain America annual 2000- Protocide is taking on and defeating an entire SHIELD assault force. Clay Quartermain and a group of higher end SHIELD agents drop down. Protocide comments at the remarkable advances in flying in the last sixty years. The SHIELD guys rush Protocide, but one of them remarks that they didn’t think anyone but Quicksilver could move that fast as Protocide starts to handle them. Clay reminds them that they are SHIELD, and that they are supposed to be the best. Protocide says that if they are the best the year 2000 has to offer he would hate to see the worst. SHIELD blasts Protocide with a heavy-duty cannon. Protocide blocks the stream with his shield and advances on the cannon. Protocide raises up his shield and brings it down destroying the cannon. Protocide’s back up A.I.M. agents arrive to find that he needs no back up as he has defeated them all. Elsewhere Cap lies near death. When he revives he goes to see Cache, still in custody, for information on Protocide. Cap offers Cache a lighter sentence for info. Cache introduces Cap to Clinton McIntyre the man who might have been Captain America. He also introduces General Maxfield Saunders the man who wanted his own Captain America. After Cache tells Captain America about Operation: Prototype Cap leaves, and Cache walks out of his prison.

Captain America vol. 3 #37- flashback- Protocide is seen fighting and destroying several Hydra bases.

Captain America vol. 3 #37- Sharon Carter informs Captain America of Protocide’s attacks on Hydra. They are confused because AIM and Hydra always got along. Intelligence suggests that AIM has a new leader. Later Sharon Carter beeps Steve Rogers when they determine AIM’s next target. Cap heads to Hydra’s waterfront facility where Protocide is destroying them. Protocide is about to crush a Hydra agent’s skull in his hand when Cap rushes in and throws his shield into Protocide’s face. As Captain America beats on Protocide he says that he doesn’t care what made him into a killer, but that he was given a chance to represent America against evil, but he chose the wrong side. Cap tells Protocide the truth about his shady past. Cap punches Protocide into some type of energy generator. Captain America says that Protocide makes him sick. Cap holds up Protocide as he blocks the shots of Hydra’s blasters. Cap realizes that there are too many of them, but then Protocide decides to team up with Captain America against them. For a moment all is as it could have been. One of the Hydra get in a lucky shot and Protocide is hit by a neural shock gun. Protocide falls into a volcanic energy core, but manages to grab the side before falling in. Cap reaches out to Protocide and helps him up. Cap tells him that he has a second chance at life now, and to use the honor he was given to help the world. Protocide says that Cap took everything that was supposed to be his and he dares talk to him of honor. Protocide knocks Cap into the energy core. Cap screams. Protocide says that with Cap out of the way he is the only Captain America left.

Captain America vol. 3 #38- Protocide returns to an AIM base all the time haunted by the words of Captain America. Protocide descends in an elevator. AIM asks about Hydra’s base and about Captain America. Protocide says that Hydra’s base is destroyed and that their operatives are dead. Billups asks again about Captain America, but Protocide just says that he has a question about him. Billups says that all Protocide needs to know is that Cap wants him dead. Protocide wonders why Cap would save him then. Billups says that Captain America is a sly enemy who will lie to get an advantage. Protocide asks about his memory that he served in the military. Billups says that he was the best soldier. Protocide asks why Cap accused him of killing his commanding officer. Billups says that it is just to gain the edge, and asks Cache if he agrees. Cache installs memories into Protocide’s mind of serving in the military, of being selected by Erskine for the super soldier serum, and of Captain America killing him out of jealousy. Protocide still questions why Captain America would save him. Elsewhere Captain America survives in the energy core by standing on his shield. SHIELD helps Cap out as they find all the Hydra dead. Cap takes Sharon Carter’s tracer for Protocide. He then takes a SHIELD ship and the Omega compound. The Omega compound is an immensley explosive liquid. Cap flies up to the base and starts fighting his way in. He comes face to face with Protocide and says that he won’t show any mercy this time. Protocide says that he didn’t ask for any. AIM’s director and Cache get into a helicopter to escape in case Protocide fails. Cap says that he won’t let Protocide kill again, and that this time he goes down. Protocide kicks Cap and says, “Not to you I’m not.” Protocide beats on Cap and says that his day is over. Cap starts to fall off the tresle, but catches it with his hand. Protocide rams his shield into Cap’s hand. Cap decides bot to use the Omega compound. He flips up and kicks Protocide. Cap then throws his shield breaking the helicopter’s rotor. The helicopter falls and explodes. Cap nearly falls in, but Protocide reaches out and grabs him. Maybe from instinct or because he wants to be the one to destroy him, but he saves him. Protocide sees that Cap had Omega compound, but didn’t use it. Protocide has a moment of clarity and realizes the truth that Captain America never killed him. Protocide throws Cap up and out of the base. Cap tells him to leap out, but the base explodes. Later Clinton McIntyre stands in front of a moving truck to get him to stop. McIntyre gets a ride.
