Surtur

Surtur, the fire demon and ruler of Muspelheim, claims to be the oldest being in the nine worlds. He is also fated to be the last being in the universe. When Surtur takes his sword Twilight and lights it in the Eternal Flame he will be given the power to raze the nine worlds. The murderer of Odin's two brothers, Vili and Ve, Surtur must surely be considered both Odin's and Asgard's greatest enemy.

Thor #349- flashback- Odin and his two brothers, Vili and Ve, dare to enter the land of Muspelheim, after slaying Ymir, to see the people of fire and the monstrous colossus who rules them. They tell the fire people that they have come to learn of lands undiscovered. They are then lead into the heart of the kingdom to meet their lord and master, though few return after doing so. They are taken to a lake of brimstone and presented. Surtur emerges from the lake and bids welcome to the sons of Bor, and asks what they wish to know. Odin asks if it is true that one day Surtur will destroy the nine worlds with fire. Surtur says that it is true. He shows them the sword he will use and that just as he was the first so he will be the last being. He also shows them the Eternal Flame of Destruction. Odin says it might be better for everyone if the flame was put out, and Surtur’s sword was broken. Surtur says the Fates have decreed that the Flame cannot be extinguished, but that they can try to break his sword if they can. Surtur strikes the ground they stand on. Fire demons attack from all sides. One of Odin’s brothers summons the raging storms of the arctic to quench the demons. The fire people start to freeze. Odin and his brothers then merge their powers to become one giant adversary for Surtur. After battling Surtur they realized that he could not be bested, and thought that maybe he was indeed fated to destroy the worlds. With one final swing they managed to break Surtur’s sword, but the price they paid was that their union was broken apart. Odin’s brother counts it as a victory, but Odin says that broken swords can be reforged. One of Odin’s brothers cuts down the Flame of Destruction so that even if he reforged the sword he could not kindle it with the flames that would end the world. Surtur starts to emerge from the lake again. Odin races out of the portal back to the nine worlds, but suddenly he realizes that he is alone. His brothers say that they must remain behind or Surtur would just hunt them down. A giant flash blasts Odin backwards. When he wakes up the entrance to Muspelheim was gone, and Odin had the combined powers of his brothers. He knew that his brothers were dead.

Journey Into Mystery #97- Surtur is seen waiting for the end of the world holding his flaming sword.

Journey Into Mystery #99- Odin journeys into the land of the trolls when he hears that they have joined Surtur in a rebel against Asgard. Odin smacks arouns some trolls until they tell him where to find Surtur. Odin ventures to the sea of flame once again. The giant Surtur emerges from the molten liquid. The fingers of Surtur’s left hand turn into serpents. Before they can reach Odin however, Odin calls down the frozen remnants of a long dead planet into Surtur’s realm. The serpents shrivel under the cold. Odin and Surtur stare at each other. Odin tells Surtur to obey his royal commands, but Surtur just plots his next move. Surtur realizes he can’t hurt Odin so he takes off after something Odin loves- the Earth. Surtur arrives on Earth before Odin can stop him. Surtur bores into the core of the planet and releases a huge chunk which flies out into the sky and becomes the moon. Odin creates the Rainbow Bridge to speed his way to Earth. Odin starts the planet spinning, and Surtur is trapped within the center of the Earth by centrifugal force. Surtur hoping to appease Odin sends out a gift of a winged horse that flies out the mouth of a volcano.

Thor #400- Loki escapes from the detention center Odin sentenced him to ponder his behavior in. Loki leaves Asgard and says he will not return to Asgard unless it is as its ruler. Loki is taken in and becomes the apprentice of Eldred. Loki learns all the magic Eldred can teach. Loki decides he has learned all he can from Eldred. One night while Eldred is sleeping Loki sends out his astral self to the land of the fire demons. Surtur asks Loki what he wants. Loki says he offers Surtur a pact. Loki will get the power he wants, and Surtur will get the souls he wants. Loki offers Eldred’s soul if he can have Eldred’s power. Loki says that he and Surtur will then unite against Asgard. After a time Loki convinces Eldred that he wants to summon Surtur. Surtur appears. Loki pushes Eldred out of the protective circle. As Surtur feeds upon Eldred’s soul Loki feels Eldred’s power flow into him.

Journey Into Mystery #104- Odin is distraught over Thor giving his love to Jane Foster. Loki suggests Odin go down to Earth and assert his authority in person. Odin gives Loki some power and leaves him in charge. Loki decides he wants to keep the throne. Loki uses the power Odin gave him to release Skagg, the Storm Giant, and Surtur, who has been trapped within the Earth for centuries. Heimdall sends Balder to warn Odin. Balder finds Thor. Thor finds Odin. Odin freezes time and sends all humans to another dimension. As Thor goes to help Balder against Skaag, a giant fireball strikes at Thor. Surtur tells Thor that even his hammer is no match for him. Thor is knocked backwards into the ocean. Odin softens the ground beneath Skagg’s feet. Skaag starts to sink into the ocean so he asks for Surtur’s help. Surtur uses heat to harden the ground around Skagg’s feet. Surtur tells Skagg to prove worthy of his efforts. Surtur tells Skagg to watch him. He says that the way to defeat the gods is to destroy what they love…earth itself. Surtur creates great flame. He takes off to melt the artic circle and flood the planet. Skagg says that he will cause such destruction that they won’t be able to follow him. Skagg summons a storm. Odin exhausts himself defeating Skagg. Thor and Balder have to stop Surtur. Thor uses Odin’s sword to draw Surtur away from the artic and towards a magnetic asteroid. Surtur is stuck onto the asteroid.

Dr. Strange #177- After defeating Dr. Strange, Asmodeus is looking at the timeless text, the Book of Vishanti, when it disappears. Asmodeus finds that the book has gone back to the Ancient One. He says that he must get it back because he needs to learn the spell of Fire and Ice. Ymir and Surtur are pictured as Asmodeus says that he can feel Ymir and Surtur straining against the dimensional bonds that bind them. Asmodeus gets to the book, but dies in battle with Dr. Strange. With his last remaining breath Asmodeus places him hand on the Book of Vishanti and recites the Spell of Fire and Ice. The Ancient One says that they cannot stop the spell and that Ymir and Surtur are coming.

Dr. Strange #178- Ymir and Surtur are pictured as Strange recalls that there is only an hour to go until the Spell of Fire and Ice is enacted. Strange tries to find a way to stop the spell, but is unsuccessful.

Avengers #61- Dr. Strange summons Black Panther and Hawkeye to help save Black Knight. Vision arrives and brings news. A volcano just erupted in Antarctica. Panther gets a report from the African nation of Wakanda that ice forms on the ground and vines. Dr. Strange tells Black Panther, Hawkeye, Vision, and the Black Knight about the forces that have been unleashed upon the Earth, and how he hopes to defeat them with the Crystal of Conquest. Vision and Black Panther take off to Wakanda to deal with Ymir, and Black Knight and Hawkeye take off after Surtur. Hawkeye and Black Knight fly over the arctic circle on Paragon. The air is full of steam. They see Surtur, and Hawkeye says that he doesn’t believe it. Surtur asks what it matters to him if Hawkeye believes. Hawkeye fires a blast arrow at Surtur. Surtur swallows the arrow as if it were candy. Surtur tries to grab them, but Black Knight swings his sword at Surtur’s hand. Knight’s sword passes through Surtur as if he were true fire. Hawkeye fires a foam arrow, but again to no avail. Surtur uses his sword to fire a flame blast at them. The blast blows them off Paragon’s back, but the horse catches them both. Finally following a mental command from Dr. Strange Black Knight flies Paragon right at Surtur. Surtur hauls back with his sword to hit them. Dr. Strange then teleports Surtur and Ymir together as Ymir is also winding up for a fatal blow. The two hit each other. They cancel each other’s powers out and both are transported back to their original locations.

Thor #176

Thor #177- All of Asgard seems ablaze. Loki has usurped the throne of Asgard sending Odin to the Sea of Eternal Night. When Surtur attacks Loki flees to Midgard. Though it is winter Midgard’s air is warm with Surtur’s power. Thor is the only one left to lead the attack. Thor throws his hammer through Surtur’s Barrier of Flame. The hammer creates a vacuum and Asgard’s defenders ride through to fight Surtur on the other side. Surtur says that only Odin’s power can rival his. Elsewhere Balder learns of Odin’s location and goes after him. As they approach Surtur separates Thor from his troops. Thor says he will stand alone. Surtur adds that is how he will fall too. Thor creates a great wind to try and “blow out” Surtur. Surtur is affected, but with a thought he regains his power and strength. Surtur says that Thor’s power is great, but that he is only a son of Odin while he is Odin’s equal. Surtur says that he is going to destroy Asgard, the universe, and then rebuild the universe to match his desires. Surtur melts a mountainside. The lava flows and further cuts Thor off from his fellow defenders. Thor gets rid of his horse and starts to climb up a mountain as the lava begins to rise. Thor flies up. Surtur says there is nowhere he cannot reach Thor. Thor reaches a dam. He breaks it apart and the water flows down towards Surtur. Odin’s sleep ends. The water turns to steam. Surtur says neither wind, nor waters, can quench his flame. Surtur blasts the water with fire dividing the sea. Surtur walks towards Thor. The Asgardian defenders have arrived and start to attack Surtur. Surtur’s heat melts every weapon before it reaches him. Fandral and Hogun rush Surtur, but Thor buries Surtur beneath a giant rock. Surtur melts the rock and Hogun and Fandral realize to attack alone is stupid. Surtur is toying with the Asgardians, setting their weapons and shields on fire. Surtur says that the time to end this has come. Thor blasts Surtur. Surtur returns the fire. The Asgardians fire a giant frost gun at Surtur. Surtur is frozen in a block of ice. His power begins to melt the ice. The water from the melting washes away everything except Thor. Surtur says that it is time for Thor to die. Suddenly Odin returns and Surtur is swallowed up by the ground as Odin once trapped Surtur within the Earth.

Thor #324- The sons of Surtur ally themselves with Loki and Tyr who have joined forces to try and topple Odin from Asgard’s throne. They also ally with the Storm Giants and Karnilla, but Hela refuses.

Thor #340- behind the scenes-

Thor #341- Odin sends out two ravens to investigate where the demons came from. Surtur bangs on his sword. He summons the Dark Elf to seek out the second son of Odin.

Thor #342- As Surtur forges his sword, one of the Ravens of Odin die as his first strike against Asgard and Odin.

Thor #343- Surtur bangs on his sword, and then names it Twilight. Heimdall sees a darkness coming towards Asgard, and then sees that one of Odin’s ravens in seriously injured and the other appears missing or dead.

Thor #344- Surtur turns from his anvil and lakes of brimstone rise up all around him. Surtur strikes Twilight into the brimstone, and as the sword catches fire Surtur announces that the sword is tempered. Acting as Surtur’s servant Malekith gets Loki to side with them.

Thor #345- Surtur holds aloft the finished unsheathed sword and says that the anvil’s work is done. Surtur makes his second strike against Asgard. Surtur shatters the anvil with Twilight. Malekith finds out the location of the Cask of Ancient Winters.

Thor #346- Surtur says, “Sons of Muspell, daughters of Fury, demons of the flame, our time has come! Sound the battlecry that all who live may hear it and despair!” An army of soldiers explode with “Doom!” Thor thwarts Malekith in his attempt to get the Cask of Ancient Winters, but Malekith does manage to use Lorelei as bait to bring Thor and the Cask to him.

Thor #347- Malekith recovers the Cask of Ancient Winters, and prepares to spread chaos across Midgard to prepare for the coming of Surtur. Malekith says that Surtur freed him from the black limbo that Odin had banished him to, and that in thanks they will use the Cask to release the Curse of the Ice so that the Destroying Fire can come. Surtur stands on the other side of the portal to Earth, and he will cross over as soon as Surtur makes his third strike against Asgard. Across millions of miles Surtur’s soldiers chant “Doom! Doom! Doom!”

Thor #348- Malekith manages to open the Cask of Ancient Winters and freezes over the blockade that plugged up the portal between worlds. Surtur makes his third strike against Asgard. He shatters the blockade and walks through the portal.

Thor #350- Odin assembles Asgard’s warriors, even those that have stood against him in the past, and tells them that Surtur is going to try and get through into Asgard to ignite his sword Twilight in the Eternal Flame, and thereby empowering him to destroy the universe. Surtur and his army walk Midgard in search of the Rainbow Bridge that will bring him to Asgard. Thor, Beta Ray Bill, Sif, and all the other warriors of Asgard (save Odin, Balder, and Heimdall) head down the Rainbow Bridge to confront Surtur. Surtur’s army, the Sons of Muspell, starts to attack in New York City and sweep over all opposition before them.

Avengers #249- behind the scenes- Thor arrives to tell the Avengers that Surtur, Malekith, and the Cask of Ancient Winters is the cause of the worldwide snowstorm. Thor says he needs the Avengers help defeating the sons of Muspell, Surtur’s followers. The sons of Muspell attack New York.

Thor #350- Suddenly Thor arrives with Starfox, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, and Captain Marvel (Photon). As they defeat Surtur’s army suddenly Thor is standing in the shadow of Surtur. “Son of Odin, hear me! Now at last has come the hour of reckoning!” Surtur tells Thor that he will watch his friends die before Surtur kills him. Suddenly Beta Ray Bill and the warriors of Asgard arrive. Surtur takes off to find the Rainbow Bridge while the good guys fight his demon horde. New York City is burning from Surtur’s demons. Thor summons a thunderstorm that puts out the fires, but leaves everything hidden in the steam and smoke. Thor stops the rain. Thor and Beta Ray Bill strike at Surtur, but it is only a simulcrum of flame that vanishes as they touch it. Suddenly a rainbow appears and Thor realizes that he has played right into Surtur’s hands. Heimdall blows his horn, and Thor knows that Surtur is at the gates of Asgard.

Thor #351- Thor leaves the Asgardian forces on Midgard to deal with Surtur’s forces so that he can help Odin against Surtur. Surtur’s forces set up a “Doom tube” (shudders) in which more and more forces keep coming through. Roger Willis shows up. He has been studying his father’s papers about the cask, and he gets flown over to England to deal with Cask and the snowy and icy weather by the Human Torch in one of the ships Reed Richards designed. Beta Ray Bill comes up with a plan to destroy the Doom tube. Thor arrives on the Rainbow Bridge to see Surtur coming upon Heimdall. Heimdall leaps up and strikes Surtur. Surtur says it was a nice shot, but Surtur is the master there. Surtur strikes Heimdall back. Surtur then shatters the Rainbow Bridge so that no other help can come from Midgard. Heimdall falls and Surtur says that Heimdall’s duty is finally over. Thor catches Heimdall and puts him down. As Thor checks to see if Heimdall lives Surtur tells Thor to let him be. Surtur says that perhaps Thor will prove more of a distraction than Heimdall did. Thor flies right into the face of Surtur. Surtur smacks Thor away and curses Thor for actually causing him pain. Thor strikes Surtur again. Surtur tries to grab Thor, but Thor dodges and hits him. Surtur tells Thor not to assume that because he is giant that he is without speed. Surtur swats Thor out of the sky, and tells Thor that he will kill him as he did his uncles. Thor hits the ground. Thor spins his hammer around to the speed of thought, and then throws it as hard as he can at Surtur. Thor uses Twilight and smashes it back into Thor’s face. Surtur laughs as he strikes Thor. Surtur starts to head into Asgard to light his sword when the gate explodes outward. Odin stands before Surtur. Odin said that he let Surtur extend himself, and that now he will face him and that Surtur will pay for all the blood spilled in his hideous cause.

Thor #352- Surtur tells Odin that he has come for his eternal flame, and that he will not be denied. Odin says that the Norns are not ready to cut the threads of life. Surtur asks what he cares about the Norns and that when he is finished there will be no destiny to weave. Odin says that Surtur is not welcome. Surtur starts to advance and Odin blasts Surtur. Surtur is knocked over. Odin blasts again, but this time Surtur cleaves the bolt in two. Surtur asks Odin if he can hear the flame and the sword calling to each other. Surtur tells Odin to feel his power now. The blow is felt on all nine worlds. Beta Ray Bill and Reed Richards manage to shut down the Doom tube. Roger Willis starts to put the broken pieces of the cask together again. Odin struggles against Surtur’s power. Odin says he is prevented from assuming the form in which he and his brothers fought Surtur the first time. However Odin says that this is his realm and he will not be moved. Odin uses the Scepter Supreme and blasts Surtur over. Surtur says that Odin is only delaying the inevitable, that his sword is replenishing his strength because it is so close to the flame. Surtur says that eventually Odin’s power will run out, but that his is constantly feeding him. Odin puts all of his power into the Scepter Supreme and blasts Surtur with it. Surtur is stunned, as he no longer feels the power of the flame replenishing him, that somehow Odin has coated his body in magic. Surtur curses himself for revealing the source of his power. Surtur calls out to Twilight to cut through time and space to Midgard to the power that will hold Odin in check. Surtur draws upon the cold. Reed Richards reverses the machine to send Beta Ray Bill and the others to the gate’s origin so that they can destroy the link between Muspelheim and Earth. The snow disappears from Midgard and Surtur uses it to blast Odin. Odin is frozen into a ball of ice. Surtur says that not all the ancient powers thank Odin for bringing order to the nine worlds and depriving them of their ancient dominions. Surtur says that this is their hour. Surtur says he knows Odin would break out in time, but that he won’t have the time to stop him from lighting the sword. Surtur says that Odin will watch him destroy everything and then Surtur will kill him. Surtur steps over the walls of Asgard and sticks his sword into the flame.

Thor #353- Surtur waits for his sword to light when suddenly the flame disappears. Surtur wonders why his sword is not lit. Surtur sees that Loki has prevented it. Loki says the flame was only an illusion. Surtur says that Malekith said that Loki had sided with them. Loki says that it’s easy to lie to deceivers. Loki blasts Surtur. Loki says Odin was right about Surtur that he wanted to destroy everything, not just Asgard. Loki asks what the good of ruling all he surveys if it was all cinder. Surtur swings his sword and shout, “Where hast thou hidden the flame?” Loki multiplies himself and they all start attacking Surtur. Surtur says that there will only be one of them left soon. Surtur blasts all the Loki doubles. Loki fades back until he can make more doubles. Surtur blasts Loki, and then starts tearing apart the rubble of Asgard looking for the flame. Surtur uncovers the flame. Roger finishes putting the Cask together and it starts to freeze together. The winter enchantment goes back within the box and frees Odin. Surtur goes to quickly put his sword into the flame, but Thor’s hammer knocks it backward. Surtur says that the power of the flame has started to flow through his sword again. Odin, Thor, and Loki stand united against Surtur. They all strike together and level Surtur. Surtur swats Odin and Loki away and says that he will not be so easily defeated. Thor pounds Surtur, and Odin and Loki rejoin him. They start driving Surtur away from the flames. Surtur cuts through time and space to cut through to Muspelheim and his flames come roaring through. Surtur says that when his flames merge with his flames any of them will light his sword. Thor summons a thunderstorm to drench Surtur’s flame. Surtur is phased when the Avengers and Asgardians topple the gate that the fire demons were coming through. While Surtur is stunned Thor figures that Surtur must be getting strength from his sword so he spins his hammer and knocks it from Surtur’s hand. Surtur’s connection to the flame is broken, and Odin is now able to grow to Surtur’s stature. Odin and Surtur lock up. Odin tells Thor and Loki to destroy Surtur’s footing. The pair falls together into the fissure, and the fissure closes back up.

Thor #399- On the top level of Seth’s Black Pyramid (which resides in the Dimension of Death), Thor finds Odin shackled. Hogun says that the last time any of them saw Odin he was battling Surtur the Fire Demon. They grab Odin, but are discovered by Grog, two Demons of Despair, as well as Seth’s minions. Later Balder releases the power that he had siphoned off of Thor. Thor quickly defeats Seth’s forces. Odin tells the others to go back to Asgard, but he tells Thor that he must remain. Odin says that Seth grabbed him out of Muspelheim before he could finish his battle with Surtur. Odin then says that his shackles were power dampeners that hid Odin from Surtur. Odin breaks the shackle and gives all of his Odin Power to Thor so Thor might be able to defeat Surtur. As soon as Odin ands the others leave the ground begins to fill with molten lava. Surtur appears and asks where the cowardly Odin is, and that he has come to finish their centuries old fight. Thor says Odin isn’t there, but that Thor is ready to fight him.

Thor #400- Surtur tells Thor to run in terror for it is Odin that he has come to deal with. Thor says that he is the one accepting the challenge. Surtur says that he has picked a horrible way to die. Thor tells Surtur that before Odin left he gave Thor all of his Odin Power. Thor swings his hammer around and around. Thor grows to Surtur’s size. Thor hits Surtur. Surtur lifts up Seth’s Black Pyramid and throws it at Thor. Thor shatters it with Mjolnir. Thor unleashes all the magic Seth had stored within. Both Surtur and Thor disappear across time and space streams. Thor and Surtur appear just outside Atlantis. Both suspect the other of bringing them there. They continue fighting until they disappear from Atlantis. They next appear in Attilan, but again only for a brief time until they teleport away. Surtur and Thor appear fighting on Rigel-3. Surtur says that he can feel the entire universe trembling in fear. Thor thinks of his father. As Thor and Surtur disappear the Rigellians note that they only have one more teleportation to go. Surtur and Thor arrive in Asgard as Odin (who has drawn immense power from Asgard itself) is fighting Seth is serpentine form. Hogun has to engage Seth before he kills Odin. Surtur points out to Thor that his father has fallen, and that soon he will set the heavens aflame. Thor hits Surtur. Thor says that they are still to evenly matched in strength, but that he is still the god of thunder and the storm. He forms a vortex around Surtur and keeps reducing the vortex a little at a time until the vortex itself implodes. Surtur is knocked out. Odin compliments Thor, but Thor says that it was a hollow victory for soon Surtur will awaken and Thor is too weak to continue fighting. Odin remarks that Surtur could break out of any prison…except one. As Odin absorbs his Odin Power again he also absorbs Surtur’s essence. Hogun also defeated Seth.

Thor #417- behind the scenes- Odin awakes from a nightmare. He says that he has seen the end of everything. He says that fire will join with ice and that the heavens will witness the passing of the gods, and then more than the gods. Vizier tells Sif that Odin has been acting this way more and more lately. He says Odin needs the Odin Sleep to restore his power.

Thor #418- behind the scenes- Vizier discovers that a mystical barrier around Asgard has prohibited the Rainbow Bridge to leading to Earth. Vizier goes to tell Odin. Odin says that he already knows because he is Odin the “all-knowing”. Vizier sees that Odin is no longer himself. Vizier tries to announce who Odin really is. Odin blasts Vizier and says that he already knows who he is. Odin mentally contacts Heimdall to stop Sif and the Celtic gods from going to Earth. He says that they are traitors. Heimdall fails because he cannot hurt his sister Sif. Heimdall says he awaits Odin’s punishment. Odin says that he understands and forgives Heimdall. Odin says that nobody will escape his imperial judgement or his royal wrath. As Odin talks to Heimdall he holds a cube that contains the Vizier.

Thor #419- behind the scenes- The final cycle of the Endless Circle begins and Ymir starts to rise out of the ground. Odin puts the cube containing Vizier on a shelf. He says he has seen his true visage and must remain imprisoned. Odin says that the Endless Circle has begun and that Asgard must die.

Thor #420- behind the scenes- Replicoid tells Thor and Hercules that they are needed in the Black Galaxy to complete the Endless Circle before it is killed by Stellaris. Odin tells the Warrior’s Three to go to the land of the Frost Giants and investigate stories of a monstrous beast terrorizing the countryside. Heimdall’s enhanced senses allow him to hear Vizier trapped within the cube. Heimdall finds the Vizier inside the cube. Vizier tells Heimdall that Odin is an imposter, but before he can reveal his true identity Odin barges in. He demands to know what Heimdall is doing there. Heimdall explains Vizier’s accusations, but says that his senses tell him that he is the true Odin. Later the Warrior’s Three find a giant outline in the shape of Ymir.

Thor #421- behind the scenes- The Warriors Three discover Ymir. Odin shouts as he senses the final cycle is nigh. He says that it is time to reveal the secret of the Endless Circle.

Thor #422- Odin explains to Heimdall that Ragnarok is coming. That many believe that the old gods have had their day, and that the new gods will rise. Heimdall points out that many of the signs of Ragnarok have come to pass: the Rainbow Bridge is broken, Surtur reappeared, as has the Midgard Serpent. Odin says that Ymir is about to fulfill the final sign of Ragnarok. Odin sends them all out to fight Ymir. After they leave Odin laughs as his shadow is in the form of Surtur.

Thor #423- The Vizier says that the real Odin would never send his warriors out to be slaughtered against Ymir. Odin says that he would if it served a greater purpose. He smashes the cube against the ground, freeing Vizier. Odin says that it is time to reveal his true name and visage.

Thor #424- Vizier says that he has brought about Ragnarok. Odin reveals that it really is him merged with Surtur that has brought about these events. Odin’s appearance morphs into that of Surtur. Odin says that Asgard will never be safe until both Surtur and Ymir are defeated. He knew once Surtur resurfaced that Ymir wouldn’t be far behind. Odin/Surtur tells Vizier the rest of his plan. Surtur emerges. Ymir spots Surtur, his ancient enemy, and says that this must truly be the day fire joins ice and Ragnarok begins. Surtur challenges Ymir and says that he fights for Asgard.

Thor #425- Asgard is damaged as Surtur/Odin fights Ymir. The Asgardians fire their mightiest weapon at Surtur and Ymir, but they are unaffected. Surtur shoots a fireball and destroys the weapon. Vizier remarks that Odin’s influence over Surtur weakens with each passing moment. Suddenly Thor returns to Asgard with Hercules, a separated Eric Masterson, and others. Vizier tells Thor that he needs to get the Twilight Sword and light it in the Eternal Flame. He says that only this weapon is capable of destroying an elemental. Vizier warns Thor that once the sword is lit that Odin will lose all mastery over Surtur. While Thor is gone Hercules and Leir join the fight against Surtur/Odin and Ymir. They hurl a large tower at them. Surtur swats it down with his tail. Surtur tells them that they would be smart to run. Ymir says that though Ragnarok is here he will still hasten their deaths. He swings with his club, but Caber pulls Leir and Hercules out of the way. As Thor and Eric Masterson reach the Twilight Sword back in Asgard Odin has vanished from Surtur. Surtur says that there can be only one reason for that…the Twilight Sword must be lit. Ymir points at Thor and the Twilight Sword. Surtur says that it is time for he and Ymir to put aside their differences and unite to bring about Ragnarok and kill the gods. Surtur says he needs his sword, but Thor says he will never have it while he lives. Ymir tells Thor to live no more. He shoots a barrage of ice at Thor that buries him. Thor can’t reach his hammer until he joins hands with Eric Masterson. They re-unite. Surtur and Ymir advance on the Twilight Sword. Thor hurls his hammer and knocks Surtur into Ymir. Thor rushes and picks up the Twilight Sword. He throws it at them, but misses. Surtur reaches over to grab the sword, but so does Ymir. Ymir claims the sword for himself, but Surtur says it is his. As they fight over the sword Thor focuses his mystic abilities through his hammer, and fires energy that he absorbed through the sword to open up a portal in the dimensions. Surtur and Ymir are sent to the Sea of Eternal Night where they are frozen in suspended animation forever.
