Journey into Mystery #97- The northern winds freeze water from the Well of Life. Finally after countless centuries a strange form of life magically appears. The ice that had been forming above the Well of Life turns into Ymir, greatest of all the evil Frost Giants. Seconds later a magic cow came to life next to Ymir. The cow provided nourishment for Ymir and he and the cow roamed the frozen wastes until one day the cow found something stirring in the ice. Buri of the Aesir is born. Buri eventually had three sons Vili, Ve, and Odin.
Journey into Mystery #98- The Ice Giants attack Asgard determined to bring frost, desolation, and eternal night to the land of the gods. As Ymir approaches Asgard a trumpet is blown summoning Odin. Odin rides out on a golden chariot. The Frost Giants see Odin coming out and know that if they kill him that the others will fall. Odin blasts meteor bolts at the Frost Giants. The Frost Giants blow in unison and knock Odin off his chariot. Odin lands on a mountaintop and draws his sword. He cleaves the entire mountain in two. The other Frost Giants fall into the crevice, but Ymir remains and throws an ice spear at Odin. The spear destroys the mountaintop. Odin runs to a specific location. Ymir follows him until he reaches an arid volcanic area. Odin activates the flames and traps Ymir forever in a wall of flame he cannot cross.
Dr Strange #177- After defeating Dr. Strange, Asmodeus is looking at the timeless text, the Book of Vishanti, when it disappears. Asmodeus finds that the book has gone back to the Ancient One. He says that he must get it back because he needs to learn the spell of Fire and Ice. Ymir and Surtur are pictured as Asmodeus says that he can feel Ymir and Surtur straining against the dimensional bonds that bind them. Asmodeus gets to the book, but dies in battle with Dr. Strange. With his last remaining breath Asmodeus places him hand on the Book of Vishanti and recites the Spell of Fire and Ice. The Ancient One says that they cannot stop the spell and that Ymir and Surtur are coming.
Dr. Strange #178- Ymir and Surtur are pictured as Strange recalls that there is only an hour to go until the Spell of Fire and Ice is enacted. Strange tries to find a way to stop the spell, but is unsuccessful.
Avengers #61- Dr. Strange summons Black Panther and Hawkeye to help save Black Knight. Vision arrives and brings news. A volcano just erupted in Antarctica. Panther gets a report from the African nation of Wakanda that ice forms on the ground and vines. Dr. Strange tells Black Panther, Hawkeye, Vision, and the Black Knight about the forces that have been unleashed upon the Earth, and how he hopes to defeat them with the Crystal of Conquest. Vision and Black Panther take off to Wakanda to deal with Ymir, and Black Knight and Hawkeye take off after Surtur. Vision and Black Panther fly a quinjet to Wakanda. They see the giant Ymir. They leap out of the ship and send it flying into Ymir. Ymir shatters into a million pieces. Black Panther starts to think that maybe Strange overestimated their foe. Panther looks back and Ymir is standing whole again. Ymir launches a portion of himself out as a gigantic ice spear. He misses them, but Panther fears Ymir might be indestructible. Panther notes that everything Ymir touches is frozen solid. Vision uses his solar power to try and melt Ymir. Vision says that he is using enough heat to melt an armored tank, but Ymir keeps advancing towards him. Ymir smacks Vision and starts looking around for Black Panther. High above Panther starts an avalanche that buries Ymir. Vision phases through the rocks and says that Ymir is not defeated. Black Panther throws a burning tree into Ymir’s mouth. Ymir grabs Panther and he starts to freeze over. Vision gets Ymir to drop Panther when he uses the last of his solar reserve power. Finally following a mental command from Dr. Strange Panther and Vision stand still and let Ymir haul back to hit them with his ice club. Dr. Strange then teleports Surtur and Ymir together as Surtur is also winding up for a fatal blow. The two hit each other. They cancel each other’s powers out and both are transported back to their original locations.
Thor #294- Ymir is created and gives birth to the evil giants and their progeny.

Thor #417- behind the scenes- Odin awakes from a nightmare. He says that he has seen the end of everything. He says that fire will join with ice and that the heavens will witness the passing of the gods, and then more than the gods. Vizier tells Sif that Odin has been acting this way more and more lately. He says Odin needs the Odin Sleep to restore his power.
Thor #418- behind the scenes- Vizier discovers that a mystical barrier around Asgard has prohibited the Rainbow Bridge to leading to Earth. Surtur's essence is still inside Odin as he is ruling Asgard.
Thor #419- behind the scenes- A group of Frost Giants chase down the murderer of seven of their children. The children were drained of their blood. Bellos the Bold runs from them with a sack of blood. Bellos makes it to a crevice and jumps in. The crevice is called the Crack of Doom. The other Frost Giants see that he has trapped himself. Bellos says that he sacrificed the children to consecrate the final cycle of the Endless Circle. The other Frost Giants say that is just a fairy tale, but Bellos throws the blood down the Crack of Doom as they kill him. The Crack of Doom starts to shake and open wide. The other Frost Giants realize before they die that this really is the Endless Circle, where Fire joins with Ice to bring about the end of the universe. A giant ice hand shoots out of the ground.
Thor #420- behind the scenes- Replicoid tells Thor and Hercules that they are needed in the Black Galaxy to complete the Endless Circle before it is killed by Stellaris. Odin tells the Warrior’s Three to go to the land of the Frost Giants and investigate stories of a monstrous beast terrorizing the countryside. Later the Warrior’s Three find a giant outline in the shape of Ymir.
Thor #421- The Warriors Three spot Frost Giants frozen in place with their faces of terror preserved. Hogun and Fandral look about for the beast that did this while Volstagg “guards” the rear. Suddenly the ice pillar next to Volstagg lifts into the air, and nearly lands on him. Fandral and Volstagg rush back, but are knocked off their horses when Ymir smashes at them with his club. They hit the ground and look up to see the face of Ymir. Ymir says that he has returned to destroy Asgard and the universe. Ymir misses Volstagg again with his club.
Thor #422- Ymir smashes the ground before the Warrior’s Three. He says that he is reborn and that he will cut a swath of destruction across the universe beginning with Asgard. Odin sends out Heimdall and Asgard’s warriors against Ymir.
Thor #423- Heimdall orders that the Warriors Three be out of the way before they fire the flame cannon at Ymir. They blast Ymir, but Ymir keeps advancing. Heimdall says that they will fight and die like gods. Ymir laughs and says that he doesn’t care how he dies provided that he does die. Ymir throws large rocks right into the Asgardian soldiers. Odin starts to transform.
Thor #424- Ymir slaughters the army of Asgard. The Warriors Three, Heimdall, and Balder withdraw to rest for more battle. Suddenly Surtur/Odin emerges. Ymir spots Surtur, his ancient enemy, and says that this must truly be the day fire joins ice and Ragnarok begins. Surtur challenges Ymir and says that he fights for Asgard.
Thor #425- Asgard is damaged as Surtur/Odin fights Ymir. The Asgardians fire their mightiest weapon at Surtur and Ymir, but they are unaffected. Surtur shoots a fireball and destroys the weapon. Vizier remarks that Odin’s influence over Surtur weakens with each passing moment. Suddenly Thor returns to Asgard with Hercules, a separated Eric Masterson, and others. Vizier tells Thor that he needs to get the Twilight Sword and light it in the Eternal Flame. He says that only this weapon is capable of destroying an elemental. Vizier warns Thor that once the sword is lit that Odin will lose all mastery over Surtur. While Thor is gone Hercules and Leir join the fight against Surtur/Odin and Ymir. They hurl a large tower at them. Surtur swats it down with his tail. Surtur tells them that they would be smart to run. Ymir says that though Ragnarok is here he will still hasten their deaths. He swings with his club, but Caber pulls Leir and Hercules out of the way. As Thor and Eric Masterson reach the Twilight Sword back in Asgard Odin has vanished from Surtur. Surtur says that there can be only one reason for that…the Twilight Sword must be lit. Ymir points at Thor and the Twilight Sword. Surtur says that it is time for he and Ymir to put aside their differences and unite to bring about Ragnarok and kill the gods. Surtur says he needs his sword, but Thor says he will never have it while he lives. Ymir tells Thor to live no more. He shoots a barrage of ice at Thor that buries him. Thor can’t reach his hammer until he joins hands with Eric Masterson. They re-unite. Surtur and Ymir advance on the Twilight Sword. Thor hurls his hammer and knocks Surtur into Ymir. Thor rushes and picks up the Twilight Sword. He throws it at them, but misses. Surtur reaches over to grab the sword, but so does Ymir. Ymir claims the sword for himself, but Surtur says it is his. As they fight over the sword Thor focuses his mystic abilities through his hammer, and fires energy that he absorbed through the sword to open up a portal in the dimensions. Surtur and Ymir are sent to the Sea of Eternal Night where they are frozen in suspended animation forever.
